SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers packaging of asphalt-prepared and asphalt and asbestosprepared roofing in rolls, including nails and cement. 2. APPLICABLE SPECIFICATIONS AND OTHER PUBLICATIONS 2.1 Specifications.--The following specifi cations, of the issue in effect on date of in vitation for bids, form a part of this speci fication: Federal Specification UU-P-268 --Paper; Kraft, Wrapping. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Material*--Material shall be as speci fied herein. Material not definitely specified shall be of a good commercial quality entirely suitable for the purpose. Material shall be free from all defects and imperfections that might affect the serviceability of the finished packaging and packing. 3.2 Pilot pack.--Prior to packing the equip ment in quantity, a pilot pack shall be sub mitted for approval'to determine conform ance with this specification. Approval of the pilot pack shall not relieve the contractor of his obligation to package and pack the equip ment in conformance with this specification. 3.3 Packaging. 3.3.1 Roofing.--Roofing shall be packaged in rolls containing 108 square feet per roll for mineral-surface roofing, and 216 square feet for smooth-surface roofing. 3.3.4 Wrapping.--The rolls of roofing, con taining nails and cement, shall be wrapped according to customary standards for do mestic shipment and sealed along the length wise joint with water-resistant adhesive conforming to' Specification JAN-P-140', type H, grade A. 3.3.5 Overwrappingi--E&ch. roll of roofing shall be overwrapped as follows: A disc of roofing material or fiberboard conforming to the material requirements of Specification JAN-P-108, compliance symbol W6s or W6c, of a diameter equal to the diameter of the roll, shall be placed against each end of the roll. The disc shall be held in place with pres sure-sensitive tape conforming to Specifica tion JAN-P-127, type L grade B, color op tional, not less than 2 inches wide. The tape shall be wrapped around the roll, with ap proximately one inch folded over the end to seal the disc in place. The roll shall be wrapped with kraft wrapping paper conform 2 BIRD 005901 ing to Specification UU-P-268, grade op tional, 60 pound weight, width equal to the full length of the roll, with not less than a 8-inch overlap at the joint. The joint shall be sealed with water-resistant adhesive con forming to Specification JAN-P-140, type n, grade A. Both ends of the roll shall be pro tected with a textile cap, extended at least 2 inches over the side of the roll. The mate rial shall have a tensile strength of not less than 20 pounds in each direction. The cap shall be secured to.the overwrapping with water-resistant adhesive, same as that speci fied above. Pressure-sensitive tape similar to that specified above, not less than 2 inches wide, shall be wrapped around the roll and overlapped for a distance of not less than 8 inches, completely covering the part of the textile cap which extends over the side of the roll. 3.4 Packing.--No additional packing will be required. 3.5 Marking. 3.5.1 For identification. -- Each package and overwrap shall be marked or labeled to indicate the items and quantity contained therein. 3.5.2 For shipment. -- In addition to any special marking required by the contract or order, shipments for the Army shall be marked in accordance with Specification 100-2; for the Navy in accordance with the requirements of the Navy Shipment Mark ing Handbook. 3.6 Workmanship.--Workmanship shall be of the highest grade throughout. SAMPLING, INSPECTION, AND TEST PROCEDURES 4.1 Inspection procedures.--For Naval pur chases, the general inspection procedures shall be in accordance with General Specifica tions for Inspection of Material. 4.2 Teats.--The packaging shall be given such tests as may be necessary to determine conformance with this specification. 5. PREPARATION FOR DELIVERY 5.1 Not applicable. 6. NOTES 6.1 Ordering data. -- Procurement docu ments should specify the title, number, and date of this specification.
