Finnigan Federal Government Relations Washington Office Asbestos In Schools Not a week after one of its subcommittees voted on the "Asbes tos School Hazard Detection and Control Act" (H.R. 1524), the full Education and Labor Committee sought to move the bill to a quick vote, absent any further hearings. The "mark-up" and vote was scheduled for March 14th, but later was postponed until March 29th. The subcommittee did amend Congressman Miller's bill slightly before approving it. The bill as introduced, required miners, manu facturers, or importers of asbestos (from the years 1946-1972) to pay into a special fund before the surveying of the nation's school buildings began. The subcommittee, fearing this could possibly delay the testing program, amended the provision so that these com panies would not now be required to contribute half of the surveying costs (up to $30 million) until after the testing was completed. This delay in mark-up of two weeks does give the industry the much needed time to express its concerns to the members of the full committee. TDF/rr
