Bendy Avenue Sunnyvale, Calif. 94086 I CONnDCNTUi ij Dear Mr. Fraiser: On April 10, 1973, at your request, personnel from the Division of Occupational Health collected air samples for the presence of asbestos fibers from operations involving grinding and sanding of a phenolic composition containing asbestos. Operator breathing zone samples were collected using a personal air sampling pump with a membrane filter having a pore size of 0.8 microns. Air was drawn through the filter at the rate of 2.0 liters per minute. Personnel performing the work were provided with cartridge type respira tors and face shields, and the work was performed inside an enclosed paint spray booth having a water curtain to contain the particulates generated during the grinding and sanding operations. The filters were sent to the California Division of Industrial Safety for fiber counting. The results are as follows: Asbestos Study, Westinghouse Electric Corp. The concentration of fibers produced by both the operations exceeds the celling or short time concentrations permitted under the OSHAct and the California GXSO of 10 fibers/cc. In addition, recommendation is made that the engineering controls stated in the Emergency Regulation on Asbestos, Article 110, March 1973, amendment to the General Industry Safety Orders, Section 5208 (b), dealing vith local exhaust ventilation system on hand-operated power tools be instituted.
