Research or. Protective Pipe Coatings
Last May the Lead Industries Association learned that the American las Association was cooperating with the Bureau of Stand ards in an investigation and actual field test of pipe coating materials used for protecting gas lines from corrosion. Inasmuch as red lead 13 an excellent protective material for ferrous metals, we were curious to know whether the proposed Investigation was de signed to include red lead among the coatings to be tested. We were especially Interested lr. the subject as recent experimental work in California indicated that red lead, when baked upon pipe, makes ar. unusually effective priming .-.oat, c'.kir.g seems to prevent any possibility of chemical or solvent inter1 ctor. between the red lead and the secondary coal-tar or aa.m'.!' c-riv..

During July and August untreated specimens of steel pipe L-ere coated at Versailles, fa., ,v1 th coating compounds used by grs sorranies. In our case v.e dec! dod to use two different types of coating, (a), a pri. ir.g coat of red lead baked upon the pipe, followed by an application of an asphaltic coating and wrap per manufactured by tho hational Tube Company, (b), a red lead coating baked uron the pipe followed by a secondary coating of a bituminous material, - in this case a product of the v;al les-DoveHermlston Company - bltumastic enamel. The application of tho red lead coating was supervised by tho rational Load Company, It was, of course, impractical for us to test every asrhaltic and bitumin ous coat in conjunction with the usa of red lead.
