Extra NEWARK PLANT PIGMENT COLOR RESEARCH REPORT SUBJECT: DEVELOPMENT OF "KROLOR" ORANGE YELLOW, K0-789-D PERIOD COVERED: September, 1966 to July, 1968 (part time) SUBMITTED BYs APPROVED BY: DATE SUBMITTED: 9/6/68 E RELEASED: 9/11/68 ABSTRACT This report is concerned with the development of an orange shade molybdate red (light, yellow masstone and strong yellow tint) "Krolor"-type pigment for use in plastic and paint trades. The excellent combination of light stability and chemical and thermal resistance should lead to other applications for this product. 1A I. INTRODUCTION Hie Introduction of the "Krolor" line (silica-coated chrome yellows and oranges) to the trade provided hew outlets for our chrome yellows and molybdate reds. Fullest exploitation of this line of products necessitates having the widest possible range of colors and properties. Sales requested the development of a "Krolor'' based on a lighter masstone-stronger yellower tint type product Such as YE-421-D to expand the "Krolor" line based on YE-698-D, which is the base for "Krolors" KO-777 and KO-786. II. SUMMARY AMD CONCLUSIONS 1. A shipping lot (SL-90787-1) has been set up as a tempor ary standard for this code* This product appears adequate in properties for the plastics trade; but may not yield high enough gloss levels for some paint applications. Sales* present thoughts for paint use involve universal colorants where gloss is not a problem* References #5, 11, 2, Samples of calcium Staybelite treated (SW-00278) and zinc Staybelite treated (sw-00306-1) have been prepared and evaluated at Newark and Chestnut Run, Both products show markedly improved gloss levels in paint systems, with the zinc Staybelite product being preferred because of a tendency toward soft films (after baking or air drying) exhibited by the calcium-treated products. Calcium and Zinc Staybelite-treated pigments cause gelation in vinyl solution (VYHH/VMCH) systems not shown by products treated with Emory 3554D/lgepal C0630 only. Reference #12, 3. K0-789-D types not treated with zinc or calcium Staybelite are markedly superior to other calcium Staybelite-treated "Krolors" in laminates where water dispersibility is a factor. 4, The utilization of presscake instead of dry color has not been successful. No real explanation has been found for this. This finding also applies to other chrome yellows and oranges utilized in "Krolor" manufacture. III. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE WORK 1. If the sales developments on this code demonstrate the need for improvements In gloss levels, the scale-up of the zinc Staybelite-treated type product (SW-00306-1) is recommended, 2. For applications where higher water dispersibility is needed, "Krolors" may be treated with Emory 3554/lgepal C0630 combinations instead of Staybelite treatment. These will re sult in better dispersions. Samples of these types based on "Krolor" Orange Y and "Krolor" medium yellow (1848-SOD,E) have been submitted to Chestnut Run for evaluation. Reference #13. Presscake used as YC-l-D source. Quality in plastics inferior to lab goal. Comparable in thermal stability to YE-777-D, 86729 00200 Colloid mill dry color YC-l-D as base material. 00200 superior to YE-777-D, 86729. Very poor gloss in paint systems. Sales accepted this lot as a goal for standardization of plant quality for plastics. 00201 01000 Dry color YC-l-D used as' base for nKrolor" and sample predispersed via ^ colloid milling and ' homogenization. Dry color YC-l-D used ' as base for "Krolor" and sample colloid milled and homogenized. , These products were found to be superior to 00997 and 00200 (1) in thermal stabil ity and abrasion resistance in plastics, (2) in gloss levels and durability in paint systems. See Exp. Series 67417, 67424. 00278 YC-l-D type base (dry) made like OlOOO except treated with 10$ calcium Staybelite. Very slightly inferior to 01000 in plastics stability, Superior to 01000 in gloss paint, but films tend to be excessively soft. Correct able by increasing bake temperature or lengthening cure cycle. 00306 YC-l-D type base (dry) made like 01000 except 10$ zinc Staybelite treatment. Plastics results similar to calcium Staybelite essential ly equal to control not Staybelite treated. Superior to 01000 type in paint gloss and normal in film hardness. Excellent all around product. See Exp.Series 68445. Evaluated at Chestnut Run in plastics (see NC-68-20). Larger batch size. Dry base YC-l-D. Colloid milled and homogenized. Analysis showed 19$ SiOa in final product. 1. Plastics evaluation shows product to be similar to 52134 and better than 52097. 2. Paint properties superior to 52134. See Exp.Series 68445, 68447. "KROLOR" ORANGE Y YE-739-D After reviewing Chestnut Run*a closeout on NC Work Request 67-11 (issued 5/1/67) and exhibits prepared in conjunction with this work, we recommend the following: 1 - Proceed with development of "Krolor" Orange Y YE-789-D equal to sw Lot 00200 (2 passes through colloid mill). As soon as patents covering this product are filed and Research and Production agree on a method of production, we will arrange limited sampling of Semi-Works Lot. 00200 or any other material you wish to select as representative of material we will produce on a commercial scale. . 2 - It is suggested Chestnut Run evaluate YE-789-P Lot 00200 in selected paint systems.(1) It would be desirable to check gloss, chemical resistance and lightfastness versus Molybdate Orange YE-421-D, and any other orange pigment now ln use Newark should issue an NO work Request. Hopefully this material will prove satisfactory in at least on systems where YE-789-P might be used in volume., Note(l) - Consideration might be given to a "32J", Universal Colorant, and a selected trade sale finish. 3 - Sales requests a program be started or continued to improve abrasion resistance of "Krolor" Orange R YE-777-D and "Krolor" Yellow Light Y-78I-D using the colloid mill. An estimate of when such products might be available for Chestnut Run evaluation, and limited trade sampling, will help guide our promotional plans. BETTER THINGS TOR BETTER UIVINO . . . THROUGH CHEMISTRY DUP050028390 -2- Sales has selected material made via dry color and colloid milling; route (SW tot 00200) even though a product made via dry color, colloid milling, homogenizing (SW Lot 01000) is slightly better in heat stability (resistance to abrasion). This . decision is based on known. production problems which will be .encountered with a homogenizer, and the fact colloid milled material is so much better in abrasion than current YE-77T* We feel most plastic compounders will be able to use yE-789-D using their conventional processes and equipment. This does not mean we should stop working for still better materials with still higher resistance to abrasion. However, we do not want to delay release of ^E-789-D or any other new "Krolor" pigment while waiting for "perfect products".
