Dear D r, Simla);

Using transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction, I have analyzed a sample of talc designated as 8-10-12.
In this sample we found no amphiboles and no serpentines. We found this
sample to be free of all asbestifom m inerals. The sample consisted
of a large portion of fines approximately 18-25% moat of which were pltrfy.
Thers was a small portion, 5-7%, which was not platy and just general
irreg u lar particles which were also thin enough to be transparent to the
electron beam. The difference here was that they were not thin sheets
with well defined crystalline edges. There was also somewhat less than
one percent of talc fibers and shards.
.
This m aterial seems to be quitegood in general and hotter than the average that we have seen. As I mentioned previously, there was slightly less fines than in Sample 8-6-7 which we analyzed previouslyI
Thank you for consulting MoCrone Associates and if you should have any questions concerning these results please contact us.

Using transmission, electron nrioECfloopy and selected area electron diffraetloni we have analyzed a sample of talo designated as 8-28-89
We found no asbesttfom minerals in this talo. We did, however, find
a few extremely fine tale ribbons and particles of rolled talc, of which we teak eleotron photomicrographs, and they axe included with this
report. Again we foundthat there was a fairly subetantlal portion of this
talo which was fine In nature, less than 5 pm In general The talo constitutes an excellent cosmetic quality talo and is extremely platy.

Using transm ission electron mioroeoopy and selected area electron diffraction, we bave analysed two samples of talc. These M o b were designated as 9-8-9 and 9-9-10. These two samples were extremely sim ilar in. that both showed a high percentage of fines, some rolled talc and fine tale ribbons.
' In Sample 9-8-9 we found one approximately 1 p m long which appeared morphologically to be sim ilar to chrysotlle. However, the SA.ED pattern positively eliminated this as a possibility.
to Sample 9-9-10 we also found one partitole Which, although sim ilar In size to dbiysotlle, was different morphologically and gave no diffraction pattern.
Both samples were platy and with the exception of the two fibers mentioned (one from each sample) there was nothing which remotely resembled chrysotlle o r amphihole.

Dear Dr. Simko:
-' i
Using transmission electron microscopy and. selected area electron
diffraction, we have examined two samples of talo which were shipped
to ns as special lots. These talos were designated as MAG 11-1-76 and 88-100, dated 11/1/76.
; j
The first set of these two talcs, MAG 11/1/76, was an excellent example of talc. It was extremely platy, had an excellent particle size distribution
and no asbesttform minerals. We did, however, find some slight traces of bodium chloride in this material, but that was the only extraneous material which we oould find in fids sample.
The second sample, 68-130 dated 11/1/76, showed some rolled talo, talo
ribbons, talc fibers and an extremely high percentage of fines, but other-
wise was extremely platy and again did not show any asbestiform minerals,
nor was there any platy antigorite. This did not look as good a sample of
talo as the MAG 11-1-76 sample in that it had a lot of fiberB, even though
they were talo.

Using transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron

Lot 1-5-9. The date on this sample was erroneously given as l-S-76

minerale. This talc is extremely platy, and In general better than
the average tala which we have seen from this supplier. Beoause of
its platlness we find some fine talo ribbons and floe rolled tala fibers
which appear Inevitabile on grinding such platy material,

.
Using transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction, we have analyzed a sample of pre-shipment talo designated as Lot 11-27-28 of the 1977 series. In this sample we found no
asbesttfoxm m inerals.
ha this sample we found moderate levels of fines and the sample again
indicated predominantly equiaxial partiles which, were not extremely
platy with, some indication of shards. Some sodium chloride was also
present. The sample, however, did not exhibit any fibers that we could

Dear lit. Sinko-
This le tte r w ill confirm and summarize the re su lts we obtained on the p a rtic le s from the f ilte r s you sent us on 26 September and id en tified as 10033 and 60007. Your "le tte r indicated th a t the black p article s cn f i l t e r 10033 were o f highest p rio rity and you were p articu larly in terested in determining whether these black p a rtic le s were amorphous carbon. During the analyses we were in frequent contact and I sh a ll therefore Ju st b rie fly stmmarize our conclusions here.
Sample 10033.
Blade -particles are a m ixture o f etnorpbous carbon and graphite. Cbnclusian is based m electron mLeroprobe analysis of black p a rtic le s which shows approximately 807 C and x-ray d iffrac tio n th ich shows a mixture of 3 phases, one amorphous, one graphite and the th ird unidentified.
Yellowish mass. This m aterial is very inhomogeneous
and contains approximately 37. S i, 12% C, 35% Ou, 4%
Fe, 3% Al, 2% P and 2% Ha. Based on x-ray
d iffractio n th is phase probably contains about 50%
CaF and 20% CuOOj. The CaF shows, however, an
inversion o f the re la tiv e In te n sitie s o f the 3.15 and
1.93 lin es and very broad d iffu se lin es in d icativ e of
smal l p a rtic le size. .
.
'
Sample 60007.
Yellowish mass. C onsist o f many fin e p a rtic le s, electron probe shows 207. S i, 8% C, 107 Ca, 12% Re, 0.8% K, 12% Al and 0.8% P. Electron probe data suggested possibly a clay but x-ray data again indicates CaF predominant.

Using x-ray diffractio n , transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction, we have analyzed a sample of Colgate ta lc, designated as wonotel $040, Lot 592200.
. X-ray d iffractio n did not detect either amphlfcole or serpentine. We did, however, find th at some chlorite, a trace of o~8i0,,, some 'dolo mite, c a lc ite and a trace of magnesite were present in th is talc.
The resu lts of our electron microscopic examination confirm th at'th ere are no asbestlform minerals, amphlhole or serpentine, present In th is sample e ith e r. The talc Is platy and has a' well-characterized crystal structure.
Thank you fo r consulting HeCrone Associates.

Dear Mr. Perrys '
We have completed our analysis of ta lc Monital #6040 lo t 791000 received 1 August, and find I t free from asbeslform minerals.
The ta lc was examined f ir s t by x-ray diffraction, which showed neither serpentines nor amphlboles present. An examination was then performed by electron microscopy combined with selected area electron d iffractio n . This examination showed l i t t l e evidence of fibrous m aterials present. High aspect ratio p articles observed In thlB ta lc were Identified by electron d iffractio n aa ribbons or sbards of ta lc. The majority of the ta lc consisted of good, platy talc. '
