'l'here is .rery pleasant significance to this meeting being held in Chicago. It indicates the westward growth of our industry and our Institute membership.
We nov have 10 out of a total of 20 active members located in Cleveland and West, with 5 on the West Coast. So it is fitting ve recognize this geographic distribution with this meeting in the Midwest.
'l'oday s annual meeting brings to a close the fourth year of operat,ica o~ the Friction Materials Standarda Institute. They have been years ~healgrowth in several directions.
Our membership of 20 aetive and 4 associate meJabera is an all time high percentage of the industry. It includes every eligible manufacturer of brake lining in the United States vith only one exception -- and that a very minor
fabricator~t ~
We also have tvo foreip associations as paying regional members, the

'l'here also bas been sound growth in the uount of technical data collected
and distributed to the members. '!'his is further reflected in the improvements

but contains several format changes which make it more useable.

General conditions in the friction terials iDduatry this past year can, I believe, be classified as fairly good. Vehicle production, vhieb is unusually high, has brought a healthy de-.nd for equi~nt brake lining and blocks, clutch Acmga and friction elements for autOIII&tic tranqissiou.
