He states that he has noticed impaired vision for the. past two years or more and of late especially knows thatihe vision in left eye has become very poor indeed. Hfs eyes are normal in external appearance and show no evidence of injury. Vision in the right is 20/70 and in the left 5/200. He has practically no refractive error and glasses do not improve his vision. Examination of the interior of both eyes shews atrophy of both optic nerves. The nerves are not completely atrophic, but I am sure that is the correct diagnosis.. ' One of the diagnostic signs of atrophy of the optic nerves is often impairment in color vision which sometimes is noticed even before failure of visual acuity. I asked him about his driving a car and recognizing the change of red and green signals at street intersections and he tells me he has no difficulty about that. However, in the usual standard office tests for color vision, he fails completely and to that extent, at least, is color blind. I am sure this condition is due to systemic causes and in no wav related to his occupation. . So far as his driving a car is concerned, that perhaps is his own affair, but in any way connected with his employment, I am sure he should not drive company cars. He is under the care of a good physician and I have communicated with him. His prognosis is poor for improvement in vision, and he will be fortune,,te if it does not become worse.
