J. P. Mieure - T2F September 26, 1977 LaLeche League Proposal ro 6. J. Levinskas - A2SG I have reviewed the La Leche League proposal for monitoring whole human milk for chlorinated hydrocarbons. In my opinion, the approach outlined in the proposal, although short on technical details, will probably accomplish the objective of determining residue levels In milk. I have the following specific comments: 1. * Dosed samples, to which compounds of Interest have been added at known levels, should be includedjn the study as__g.ua 11 ty control checks on each laboratory. Just because a laboratory has carried out studies of chlorinated hydrocarbon concentrations does not guarantee the laboratory's proficiency. 2. The AOAC methods referenced are as good as any for these analyses. 3. No standard methods exist yet for measuring chloroform in milk at low levels. The "purge and trap" procedure, developed for water in our laboratories and later reported by Bellar and Lichtenberg (Journal ANNA, 66, 739 (1974), might be appropriate for milk. 4. I know of no method for measuring PVC (polyvinyl chloride) in milk, nor am I aware of special concern over the safety of PVC. I suspect the compound of Interest to the League Is vinyl chloride monomer.
