^.aaa a-T RcceWed The Institute of Industrial Health, The University of Michigan, just released its confidential report to the Occupational Health Committee of the Manufacturing Chemists* Association entitled "Epi demiological Investigation of the Polyvinyl Chloride Industry in Reference to Occupational Acroosteolys is. ** The over 5,000 subjects of this study were employed by 19 corporations, including 32 plants in the United States and Canada which are involved in the production of PVC resins and/or compounding and fabricating operations involving these resins. MCA will hold a meeting of representatives of these companies on May 6, 1969 to discuss the findings of this study. I will represent UNIROYAL at this meeting. Also, a member of the Institute of Industrial Health will give a paper on this stuty this month at the annual American Industrial Health Conference, and next month at the annual American Industrial Hygiene Conference, to acquaint the interested scientific communities with the findings. As you are well aware, UNIROYAL was a participant in this study and, fortunately, no cases of acroosteolysis were found among our studied employees. Because no cases of this disease were identified in per sonnel in compounding and fabricating operations, no further PVC health studies or medical surveillance will be undertaken at this time in C, I and P plants. Dernehl, Wolfsie, and McCormick, met October 3 with representatives of the University of Michigan, to review the Epidemiologic Study of manufacture of PVC. It is anticipated the project can be completed in November. The re-x-rays requested have been supplied and the computer analysis will get underway shortly. Although the computer study is not being delayed for information on operational procedures, they are still awaiting this from your company as requested in a special report cleared September 10th. For plants surveyed, they need information on procedures from the point immediately following completion of polymerization, i.e: (1) Time from the end of the polymerization phase to the opening of the reactor. ... (2) Pressure (psia) parameters during this phase, e.g, how hard a vacuum pulled in the reactor, how long. (3) Rate of temperature change after termination of the reaction (from termination of polymerization to opening of reactor).
