Boyd and Company on Vinyl Chloride/Polyvinyl Chloride Health Studies Literature Abstracts was presented by Dr. Boyd and Ms. Philamenia Hefter. This report was prepared as a sample work document to illustrate their company's activities in the review of 428 presently identified literature references on vinly chloride and polyvinyl chloride health effect studies. The report covers the listings and abstracts prepared on 100 of these documents. The committee agreed to review this material carefully and submit comments with respect to changes which would improve the usefulness of the material. After some discussion, it was agreed that this type of information stored in the Boyd Company's computer system would be extremely useful in future health study activities. It was further agreed that the Health Committee would recommend to the Steering Committee that the literature review and abstracting be continued to include all of the presently identified documents in the computer system. It was estimated that the cost of completing this review plus additional current documents would be approximately $40,000. It was agreed that the Steering Committee be requested to authorize expenditure on this project not to exceed $40,000 for the balance of the fiscal year ending May 31, 1981. It was estimated that the cost of updating this system with abstracts of current literature would probably run between $5,000 - $10,000 each subse quent year. It was agreed that this file should be open for information retrieval purposes to all presently active members of the PVC Safety Group on a cost basis. Some consideration was also given to making this file available to non-members of the PVC Safety Group at a reasonable charge to be determined. Other documents relating to the field will be considered and submitted for inclusion in the system after screening by the Health Committee. 2 - Other Regulatory Activities There were no other regulatory activities discussed as they were scheduled on the agenda of the Steering Committee's September 25 meeting. SPI-00002 -3- 3 - NCI Plasticizer Studies There was a general discussion of the information available on the National Center Institute's studies on diethyl hexyl adipate and phthalate. Inquiries will be made as to the plans being made by the CMA committee consideraing these studies with respect to public statements regarding risk to workers and/or the public. (A draft statement for use by members of the PVC Safety Group will be prepared as may be required). 4 - Flammability Mr. Lawrence reported that the PVC Fire Safety Committee has been relatively inactive and that with the retirement of its Chairman, Dan Kent, attention must be given to the future activities of this committee. After some discussion, it was agreed that PVC producer members should be encouraged to take an active part in the combustibility programs of SPI's Coordinating Committee on Consumer Safety (CCCS). The committee will be polled to determine interest in continuing versus merging interests into the CCCS programs. 5 - The meeting adjourned at 4:45 p.m. Respectfully submitted.
