EC50:
The inhibitoryeffecton the growth of Skeletonema costatum isexpressed as the concentrationof a product giving 50% reductionof growth rate(EC50). This effectconcentrationand the 95% confidence limitwere calculatedby the use of thecomputer programme TOXEDO developed by VKI (Denmark), assuming a logarithmicnormal distributioonf data. The programme also calculateconcentrationsinhibitingrowth rate10% and 90% (ErC Io and ErCgo).
NOEC:
CalculationofNOEC (No Observed EffectConcentration)isdone by singlefactorANOVA followed by Bonferronisprocedure forcomparing each concentrationmean with the controlmean.

CULTIVATION:
The testorganismswere suppliedas adults(4-8mm insize)and were heldin aeratedseawaterat 15*C. A smallamount ofnaturalseaweed was used for feeding.

Each testconcentratiownas preparedby addingtheproductin600 gmms of damp sedimentin a plasticbucket.200 ml of seawaterwas added and tlae bucketwas shaken for3 hours.
