DATE Of SURVEY February 20, 1980 DISCUSSION Construction insulators and laborers wore personal samplers during the removal of insulation from the third level of the e;.- 1 ernmost boiler in the # Powerhouse. All employees involved woje disposable coveralls and respirators. The insulation was adequately wetted with water during removal. The first set of samples was taken while the insulation was being removed from the front of the boiler and placed in plastic bags. The second set of samples was taken while insulation was being removed from a horizontal section of the boiler and shoveled into plastic bags. The personal air samples indicated concentration from 0.2 to 0.8 f/cc. The OSHA standard sets a permissible exposure limit of 2 f/cc for an eight-hour time-weighted average exposure and a ceiling limit for a fifteen minute exposure of 10 f/cc. Continued use of the prescribed work procedures - use of water to wet insulation, respirators, barricading the area, etc. - should aid in keeping exposures below the OSHA standard. DATA See page 2.
