I have attached a list of possible candidates that were recommended earlier and note that Professor Lombardo is not on this list. The plan is for the technical committee to provide a prioritized list of 2 or 3 preferred candidates for the oversight committee to discuss/approve. At this stage I would ask Myron to join the technical committee in the technical committee discussion even though it appears ExxonMobil is already confident of their first choice (or am I misspeaking ?). Paul is Associate Professor of the School of Medicine and Director of the Program in Law and Medicine at the Center for Biomedical Ethics at the University of Virginia. The following are excerpts from Paul's email response to Myron: "Before I left, I had time to catch up with Baruch Brody. I gave him your regards. "Despite his medical condition, he was in good spirits, and seemed not to have slowed down too much. He has been able to schedule his dialysis at times convenient for his work day so he makes the most of a difficult situation. "He spoke in some detail about his contribution to the Shanghai project, saying he had wanted to continue, but was of necessity setting aside any travel time he may be able to take for visiting family. He was very complimentary of your work and the willingness of the project managers to implement procedures recommended by the ethics panel. "In general Baruch said nothing that would dissuade me from participating--to the contrary, he encouraged my involvement." Paul then expressed interested in working on the Ethics Review Panel and went on to say the following: "As we discussed, this kind of research has significant public policy implications and the potential to generate controversy and negative reactions. While we would all hope to avoid such events, prudence dictates that I require an indemnification clause in the consulting agreement as a condition of participation. I will be happy to provide language to your contracting office that can serve that purpose. "With adequate advance notice, I am usually fairly flexible in scheduling conference time and travel for consulting. This year it would be very helpful to know if the Asilomar conference will be in the last week of August as it was previously. "Should we need to discuss any details, I am generally available in my office in the mornings. I am sure there will be a thousand questions as I get involved, but for now I will just wait to receive a confirmation from you about what to expect next." We hope the Technical Committee will consider this nomination favorably as they prepare their ranked list of ERP nominees for the Oversight Committee's consideration. Path Forward Re: ERP Vacancy Benzene Health Research Consortium (BHRC) Oversight Committee - There appears to be general consensus within the Oversight Committee on a path forward regarding the ERP, following Baruch Brody's resignation: 1) The ERP shall remain an independent and autonomous entity within the Shanghai Health Study; 2) A US-based ethicist should be identified and recruited to fill Baruch's vacancy. Please advise if you have an alternate proposal or take exception to this plan; otherwise, this will be understood to be "adopted" by the Oversight Committee without need for a conference call. Action Item - API will quickly assemble a list of candidate US-based ethicists for consideration by the Oversight Committee. I will begin by asking Dr. Brody and others for potential candidate names; for each, I will attempt to provide a brief biographical sketch from internet resources.
