`TRANSLATION: BDIChiefExecutive Conference (Brussels, 14 November 2023, 11:30 - 12:30) As spokesperson for the annual Brussels conference of the Federal Association of German Industries (BDI), DG Fink-Hooijer made a brief presentation on "Environmental policy in the context of the challenge of claims: high standards, confiicts of objectives, reduction of red tape -- what priorities the EU sets?" followed by a discussion. Following an introduction by MEP Christian Doleschal (CSU, ENVI Member) about expectations for the next Commission and comments on legal acts on air quality, PFAS, REACH and NRL, Ms. Fink-Hooijer was asked to give a brief overview.
Pollution has economic costs, loss of resources, negative impacts on human health and loss of biodiversity. There is no contradiction between environment (protection), economic prosperity, competitiveness and our strategic autonomy and resilience. The Green Deal is therefore not just a climate and environmental agenda. It is also an economic policy agenda. From the outset, it has been conceived as a European growth strategy to establish a green industrial policy based on a circular economy. During this mandate, the Commission has put forward proposals dealing with product design - eco-design for sustainable products or batteries are important examples. We are witnessing a paradigm shift in the business and financial sector in terms of the dependence of our economy and its impact on nature and biodiversity, as well as the resulting economic and financial risks. The ECB and the national central banks shall take into account the deterioration of nature and biodiversity loss in their risk assessments. This is a long-term process and will not happen tomorrow, but industry and finance support sustainable growth. Europe can go ahead by implementing laws that set a direction. The Green Deal is the right approach, but the implementation of the Green Deal under the next Commission will be very important. This was also confirmed by Mr Doleschal.
An important topic during the meeting was PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, the `forever chemicals'). These represent a serious problem for human health and the environment. At the same time, DG FFH also stressed that the Commission is aware that certain types of PFAS, in particular fluoropolymers, are currently needed for critical applications such as chips, which are crucial for sustainable mobility and the green transition. The comprehensive ban on the use of PFAS, with some exceptions, is still under consideration. DG FFH informed the managing directors that, although REACH will not be finalised in this legislative term, steps continue to be taken to prepare and finally implement REACH under the next Commission. The topic and discussions on chemicals will continue and are expected to become even more public (see the debate on Belgian drinking water), even if REACH is not yet available.
Have a nice rest of the day. Best regards,
