Local News July 18, 1974 Transcript: Chemicals and Cancer Story (Providence Valley) Providence has not been shining on Providence Valley. The rural community in Cecil County, Maryland, is beautiful. But many of its people are sick. A local physician says the cancer and other sicknesses can be traced to Galaxy Chemical. . . a chemical processing plant nestled in the valley. Dr. Peter Capurro said he could prove the plant was discharging dangerous chemical solvents. The plant operator told Capurro to go back to Italy. Angered, the pathologist tested the air and water around Galaxy and found they contained 25 solvents. He tested the blood of valley residents and found they contained the following solvents: . . .acetone . . . benzene . . . carbon tetrachloride . . . methyl chloride . . . methylene chloride . . . methyl ethyl ketone . . . methyl isobutyl ketone ...tetrachloroethane . . . toluene (Bite of Dr. saying cause cancer) The house of some cancer victims are for sale. Others are boarded up of those who have lived and stayed in the valley, many say they aren't well. (Mrs. Evans describes symptoms) Since Dr. Capurro's initial findings, pollution from the plant has been cut back. But the News 4 team could see it oozing into the creek. From the smell of the plant we all suffered nausea and cramps. The residents still suffer, too. AS I 000018433 (Mrs. Evans is sick) That's been going on since the plant opened in 1961. Dr. Capurro and other residents sued the plant and won $35, 000 but they haven't been paid.
