Confirming our conversation, the mill trial run of asphalt roofing was made May 9 and the material shipped May 10. I want to emphasis again that this experimental material is not a good sheet and should be used only to evaluate the appearance and mechanical properties of the roofing system. The granules are not well embedded in the coating, which is also insufficient in weight. These are the reasons for my concern. The sheet is about 20# underweight as a result. However, the roofing machine did run long enough, with the auxiliary slitting and embossing equipment an it, to enable us to get just about enough material for your installation. Therefore, I elected to take this material rather than possibly have to wait for another trial to be scheduled* The jumbo roll of 44* roofing is about 400 linear feet long. The middle of this roll has some pieces of black coating asphalt on It which probably cannot be removed. These are scrapings from the embossing wheels. I would suggest that you look over the material before applying it* The embossed lines are not positioned exactly where they should be. However, the relationship among them should be correct. The two middle lines are not as deeply embossed as the out side lines. This is probably due to a combination of springing of the shaft holding the embossing rolls and possibly a slightly concave anvil roll. Mr. 3. A* Edberg - 2- May 15, 1961 I was able to get 18 joint strip rolls out of the material. If you need more you will probably have to cut it out of some of the material on the jumbo roll. The jumbo roll material was just over 44n wide so I had the joint stripe slit just voider 4" wide. Some of the jumbo roll material can be cut up to use as ridge cap. Also, I think the 44w wide sheet and the joint strip should be nailed at the ridge to help resist slippage on the 3" slope in hot weather. I will be very interested in how you make out with this roof and will look forward to hearing from you. It will be at least two more weeks before the wallcovering is run.
