Dear Bob j I spent the day at the General Electric laboratories
in Schenectady Friday, and one of the interesting things -which I saw is their latest type of mercury detector. This operates on a constant stream of air pumped through the equipment and gives a direct reading of mercury concentration dorm to an ex tremely low figure. The principle followed is the absorption by the mercury vapor of a mercury resonance radiation emitted by a mercury arc. I discussed with several of their people the possibility of making a similar lead detector, and while there was some disagreement as to just how this would be designed, they seem to feel that the problem looked at least promising. I am passing this on to you for information and eL so to get your reaction as to whether you think it is worth while to try to push this any further.
