Cronin RE Sampling and Evaluation of Airborne Asbestos Dust - Bridgeport Plant V *V ,* v. c RD-69 REV. -58 ' / REMINGTON ARMS COMPANY^INC. INTER-DEPARTMENTAL CORRESPONDENCE Remington. cc: Dr. E.M. Marks R.M. Malcom W.E. Fitzgeralc W.H. Howell G.L. Smith R.H. Gruss G.E. Puckett File Bridgeport, Connecticut December 10, 1973 TO: P.E. CRONIN FROM: W.D. DECKER SUBJECT: SAMPLING AND EVALUATION OF AIRBORNE ASBESTOS DUST - BRIDGEPORT PLANT. During the period September 27, 1973 to October 26, 1973, the writer took 34 personal and environmental samples in areas of the plant where Asbestos is handled either in it's raw form or as a Dry Molded Base Wad. SUMMARY 1. The ceiling threshold limit value of 10 Fibers/cc was exceeded in the Asbestos Wood Flour mixing room in bldg. 340-4. This condition requires complete protective clothing. 2. The proposed 1976 time-weighted average threshold limit value of 2 Fibers/cc was exceeded for the Asbes tos-Wood Flour mixing operator in bldg. 340-4; by the Process Checker in the Assemble Head and Prime Room - (New Style); and by the Colton Wad Operator. 3. Elimination of the practice of using air hoses to clean equipment and substitution of vacuum cleaning equipment is indicated. 4. More positive ventilation of machines is indicated. Entirely too much dust is created in the processing of D.M.B.W, mixture from start through A.H. & P. RESULTS OF MONITORING PROGRAM METHOD OF SAMPLING: "Monitaire" portable pump utilizing Millipore 37 m.m. mem brane filters contained in cassettes. METHOD OF ANALYSIS: Fibers counted using Unitron phase contrast, microscope at 400X magnification.
