Ph.D. Vice President-- Science MINUTES CTFA TALC -TASK FORCE The Task Force of the Talc Subcommittee consisting of people interested in visiting Dr. hanger at the Mt. Sinai facilities, was held on September 9 r 1976 at the Chemists' Club in New York. Those in attendance were: Tryggve Baak George Lee, Johnson & Johnson Robert Rolle, Johnson & Johnson John Schelz, Johnson & Johnson Terry Smith, Fabarge Ian Stewart, McCrone Associates Norman Estrin, CTFA Dr. Estrin introduced the purpose of the meeting as to define an agenda for the planned September 29 meeting with Dr. Langer. I. Mt, Sinai Visit A. Participants -- Those committee members who have expressed interest in participating in the meeting with Dr. Langer include: George Sandland, Tryggve Baak, George Lee, Robert Rolle, Jack Schelz, Terry Smith, Harold Stanley, Ian Stewart, and Norman Estrin. In addition, it was suggested that Dr. Cliff Wilson of the FDA be invited to join the group. It was noted that this group is somewhat larger than the optimum size for the purpose of the visit. B. Proposed Agenda -- 1. Introduction -- Dr. Estrin will introduce participants and outline the purpose of the visit as to exchange information relating to talc analysis and methodology. Dr. Estrin will suggest a brief tour of the.facilities to be followed by a discussion by CTFA participants on the development of CTFA methodology. 2. Tour of Laboratories. 3. CTFA Standard Making Activities -- Mr. Sandland will describe briefly the role of the Standards Committee in developing a talc specification and methodology. Goodhue WCD 000081 2- 4. CTFA Methodology -- Mr. Schelz and/or Dr. Rolle will discuss in detail CTFA's methodology. 5. Recent Progress at Mt. Sinai -- It is hoped that Dr. Langer and his staff will bring the group up to date on its progress and methodology for talc analysis. II. The fdllowing other topics were discussed by the Task Force: A. T^lc Methodology -r Dr. Stewart noled that.Dr. McCrjone has prepared comments on CTFAjs proposed methodology. Dr. Estrin described the timetable necessary for publication of the standard and urged that Dr. McCrone's comments be forwarded directly to Dr. Rolle for review as soon as possible. B. The Langer Paper -- It was agreed that there is to be no acknowledgment or discussion of the manuscript at t h e ' September 29 meeting. Pertinent questions on methodology ' etc., can, of course, be raised. Mr. Lee presented to Dr. Estrin a critique of the manuscript. Dr. Estrin suggested that the critique be rewritten as a formal letter to the editor of the Journal and reported to the group that the editor has agreed that such a letter would be published by the Journal. Dr. Estrin suggested, in addition, that Dr. Rolle consider writing a formal paper on his work on comparative methodology. It was suggested that the theme of the paper be the development of the CTFA methodology. Dr. Estrin agreed to forward to the editor a copy of the critique with the promise that the letter to the editor would be forth coming. Dr. Estrin will investigate the possibility of simultaneous publication with the editor although problems that could rise as a result of the simultaneous publication were discussed with the Task Force. Mr. Schelz that outlined in detail the September 8 draft critique for the benefit of the Task Force. The Task Force discussed but did not arrive at any conclusions on the advantages and disadvantages of submitting a letter to the editor together with or instead of a paper on methodology. The question as to who the authors of either the letter to the editor or the paper would be was discussed but not resolved. The possibility of having Dr. Kraus from the Colorado School of Mines prepare the letter was noted. It was agreed that the group would meet on September 29 at 10:00 a.m. at the Mt. .Sinai Complex, Nathan Cummings Basic Sciences Building, 3rd Floor --- Room 320, 10 East 102nd Street in New York City.
