They continue to use Abex friction materials on the rear drum brakes of the majority of their cars. As noted, we are in line for an additional 30 to 40,000 vehicles worth this year because of the elimination of four-wheel disc brakes on certain models. Formulations involved will be 734-161 primary and 38-27E secondary. The status on rear drum brakes which Abex supplies should remain the same for the next three model years: 1980, 1981 and 1982. They have been presented data on non-asbestos materials; however, there is no great rush to get these evaluated and approved. They plan to let the other divisions go through all the screening processes and the best one that comes out of that evaluation will be ordered and run. As stated by Mr. Edsall, the material will have to be awfully good in all respects, in particular, customer/commercial acceptability aspects before they will make a change.
