Sanders Subject Asbestos Monitoring - Central Shops Address BRP Date October 22, 1981 During the week of September 21, I collected personal breathing zone samples to document the potential for employee exposure to airborne asbestos fibers. The samples were col lected during short periods of time when maximum exposures were anticipated. The representative short term exposures for the machinist, carpenter, and general service employee monitored were all well below the OSHA ceiling concentration of 10 fibers/ cc, averaged over a 15 minute period. The results of the samples are given in the attached table. Employees in the shop had raised questions concerning the use of protective clothing while working with Transite which contains asbestos. The asbestos standard requires use of protective clothing when the concentration of asbestos in the work environment exceeds the ceiling concentration. Based on these samples and my observation, it is unlikely that such conditions will occur unless problems develop with the local exhaust ventilation system. While there is no reason for us to require the use of protective clothing in this area, it is not unreasonable to have the disposable protective coveralls avail able for use at the employee's option.
