When you've had a chance to consider this, let me know what you think. We should like to schedule the mobile x-ray to visit Pace but need your concurrence and that of Bark to proceed. Tepper, M.D. Corperau Medical Director 1 February 1977 Clay Anth any Waggenspack, M.D, 3849 Nort i Boulevard Baton Roug e, Louisiana 70821 Dear Clay At our Ne w Orleans physicians' meeting last year, the group briefly discussed our Compa ny's objective of moving toward on-site periodic screening programs at those facilities which were large enough to have a full-time nurse and an adequatel y designed and furnished health unit. At Calvert City and Pensacola we have e mployee populations which will support this kind of continuous activIty, with scheduled clinician time each week; however, most of our other plants are too s mall. For sever al months we have been experimenting with a scheme whereby a medical team sets up an operation for a few days in a small plant, utilizing a conference r oom, several offices, or the like. We have included Ron Lutz, our internist whom you met, one or two nurses with experience in screening procedures, and Audrey Freeman, who works with the history forms and is in general charge of logistics and arrangements. We have a rranged for chest films before the team's visit at a local hospital or with a mobile unit for which the technical quality of films has been assessed by Ben Felson, M.D. Blood has gone by air mail to Metpath in New Jersey, either at the time of the visit or before it, if we can arrange for on-site venipunct ure by a local nurse or if one of our people can conveniently drop in. The team then does EKG's, spirometry, visual acuity, "hands-on" physicals, etc. Our experience thus far leads us to believe that this approach is convenient, efficient, and economical and presents no decrement in quality, in compariso n with alternatives. As we loo k over sites that should or could be visited in the next 4 months, the St. G abriel plant appears on the list. We have not utilized our team approach there, as you know, but would like to give it*a try. The best way would be to schedule the visit at a time when you would be available to consuit so t hat you could be with us as a clinician. If it is fundamentally acceptable to you, we would ask: 1) That you propose a couple of dates in April-May when you would have an open day; 2) That you suggest the most suitable place for chest films, in r terms of proximity to St. Gabriel and quality of performance, if a mobile unit cannot be suitably scheduled; 3) That you let me know whether or not there is a nurse known to you who could do venipunctures before our visit and put the blood chemistry-hematology kits in the mail. This may all sound a bit strange, but it may clearly be the way to go.
