OPERATIONSt
The Trench retort fumaee operated only one IS retort unit for 118 fumaee day* during the yeer In campaign* of about 45 4*7* eaeh. A total of 1,197.8 tons of electrolytic *ina wa* charged at an average working eoat of $38,766 per ton exclusive of major repair*, depredation and peaking eoata, and including the retroactive pay adjuatnent amounting to $0,381 per tan. Tbe natal loaa waa 3.28% for the rear on the Trenoh fumaee operation.
Tbe Muffle Turnaa* waa operated 183 fumaee day* producing zlno oxide and 879 day* on slab slno. A total of 8,611.5 tone of scrap was oharged for xlne oxide production, and 4,065.4 tons of aorap for slab sine production. The average working cost wa* $84,847 per ton of scrap charged for oxide, exclusive of depreciation, najor repair* and packing coats, and including the retroactive pay adjustment amounting to $0,838 per ton. The average working cost on slab zinc wa* $28,873 per ton of scrap ehargsd, exclusive of depreciation, najor repair* and packing costa, and including the retroactive pay adjustment amounting to $0,311 per tan. The netel loss was 1.84$ on zlno oxide operations and a gain of 0.98JI was shown for slab slno operations.
The American Process operations consisted of the operation of one eix-door unit for th* entire year. A total of 1,855.0 tons of zincbearlng material was treated with a loss of 13.87? for the yetr. Ths average working oost was $37,514 per ton exclusive of depredation, najor repairs and paokiag costs, and including the retroactive pay adjustment amounting to $0,588 per ten.

LABOR SHORTAGE
The eritical labor shortage presented a serious problem through out tha year. It became necessary to start hiring women late In 1948, and as the labor shortage became more acute, it was necessary to resort to the employment of colored wcosn. By December, 1943 So of tha total operating force was made np of women and 67% of these women were colored. The employment of this type of labor has reduced the efficiency of all operations.

A total of $768.31 was spent on appropriations in 1943 to construct a Conorste dock and wooden bins for tha storage of scrap zinc materials.

The working eost for the entire plant for the year 1943 was
$48 .880 per ton of material charged, exclusive of depreciation and major
repairs, and including the retroactive pay adjustment amounting to $0,433
per ton.

A total of 10,483,978 pounds of xlna oxide and 3,591,614 pounds
of zinc slabs were shipped excluding tha by-products froai the secondary
metal operations that were sold.
ZINC MATERIALS PORCHASgDi
We purchased 1,605.0 tons of electrolytic zlno at an average cost of 8.879^ per pound and 6,959.7 tons of secondary matals at an average of 6.536^ per pound of zinc contained. The Sast 8t. Louis prime western zinc price was unchanged for the entire year of 1943 at 8.85?
per pound.
