APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF MAY 6, 1959, MEETING Minutes of the May 6, 1959, meeting were approved. 2. RETIREMENT OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS Dr. Kelly proposed a vote of thanks to Dr. J. H. Foulger and Dr. D. 0. Hamblin on their retirement from the committee. He noted that both gentlemen have served as chairman and that both have been members since the committee's inception in 19^6. It was unanimously agreed that an item be included in the minutes of the meeting to record the appreciation of the Medical Advisory Com mittee for their long and active service. 3- ELECTION OF NEW MEMBERS The committee unanimously recommended to the Board of Directors that the following be elected members of the Medical Advisory Committee, viz; Dr. A. Fleming, E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., Inc. Dr. H. Golz, American Cyanamid Company. CMA 060033 MAC-13 k. ELECTION OF OFFICERS The committee unanimously recommended to the Board of Directors that the following committee officers he appointed, viz; Chairman -- Dr. R. E. Kelly, Monsanto Chemical Company Vice Chairman -- Dr. T,, W. Nale, Union Carbide Corporation. 5 . TERM OF OFFICE It was agreed that the office of chairman and vice chairman shall be held for two (2) years commencing October 1. 6. STATUS OF CHEMICAL SAFETY DATA SHEET PROGRAM A. New Sheets (1) Methyl and Ethyl Acrylates Dr. Sutton offered to review the proposed final draft of the medical management sections of this sheet in the light of further comments now received. Comments were made that in statements of hazard the word "'toxic*' should not be preceded by qualifying words such as "mildly," since individual interpretation might lead to neglect of essential safety precautions. (2) Chlorine Following publication of the "Chlorine Manual" by the Chlorine Institute the committee will review the section on medical management for suitability for inclusion in the proposed chemical safety data sheet. (3) Sulfur Chlorides - final draft approved. (U) Toluidines - Dr. Fleming was appointed sponsor for this draft. (5) Acetone - draft in preparation - sponsor - Dr. Sutton. (6) Butyraldehydes - draft in preparation - sponsor - Dr. Sutton. (7) Benzoyl Peroxide Dr. Fleming was requested to contact Dr. Gilbert of the Dupont Company regarding the draft for the medical management sections of the sheet so that this project can he finalized. (8) Chloroform - draft in preparation by Dow Chemical Company sponsor - Dr. Golz. (9) Methylene Chloride - draft in preparation by Dow Chemical Company - sponsor - Dr. Sutton. (10) Boron Hydrides It was agreed to postpone further action pending a decision by the General Safety Committee whether to proceed with this sheet. CMA 060034 MAC-1U B. Revisions to Chemical Safety Data Sheets (1) SD-1, Formaldehyde - revised draft approved. (2) SD-2, Benzene - revised draft approved. (3) 8D-3, Carbon Tetrachloride - Dr. Haslam's draft under review, (4) SD-4, Phenol - Dr. Haslam's draft under review. (5) SD-5, Nitric Acid - in preparation - sponsor - Dr. Kelly. (6) SD-6, Paraformaldehyde - revised draft approved. (7) SD-8j Ammonia (anhydrous) in preparation - sponsor - Dr. Sutton. 7* REVISION OF FORMAT OF MEDICAL MANAGEMENT SECTIONS OF CHEMICAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS Following discussion led by Dr. Dernehl the committee agreed to change the format for Section 10 of chemical safety data sheets as follows: 10. MEDICAL MANAGEMENT 10.1 Health Hazards 10.1.1 does not present a serious industrial hazard if workers are adequately supervised and instructed in proper means of handling it. 10.1.2 Acute Toxicity Note: This section is to be covered by a paragraph or two giving all aspects of acute intoxication. 10.1.3 Chronic Toxicity Note: This section is to be covered by a paragraph or two giving all aspects of chronic intoxication. If sensitization is a problem it should be covered here In a separate paragraph. Absence of sensitization should not be mentioned. 10.2 Preventive Measures 10.2.1 Environmental Control Note: This is to be a statement emphasizing importance of environ mental control. Reference to other sections of the safety data sheet should be made as appropriate. 10.2.2 Personal Hygiene - No change. 10.2.3 Physical Examinations This is to apply to all examinations. Specific mention of periodic CMA 060035 MAC-15 examinations should not he made. Where applicable, special studies which may be desirable in those exposed may be mentioned as valuable in medical control. 10.3 Suggestions to Physicians - No change. 8. SAFETY GUIDE Dr. Demehl discussed the draft for the proposed Safety Guide on "Health Factors in Safe Handling of Chemicals." It was agreed that a paragraph or two dealing with the basic organization of a company medical service should be added. 9. COMMITTEE MEETINGS The committee resolved to meet twice each year. 10.
