Bell, Jr. DATE: May 8, 1987 SUBJECT: Pilot Design for Lake Charles Enzyme Level Review We have put together what is felt would help evaluate the meaning and significance of the isolated cases of abnormal enzyme levels at Lake Charles. I have talked with Susan Kuis about the possible TSCA 8(d) reporting requirements and she will review this letter and advise us for the record. The following is the outline we discussed. This should be shared with the plant for any modifications. Lake Charles Project 1. Study Objective: To review and establish if there is any correlation between employees with abnormal liver enzyme levels and their work environment. 2. Program Design: a. Compile the records of employees who have been removed from potential exposure to plant B chemicals because of abnormal enzyme levels. The population to be reviewed will be comprised of those employees who were placed on restrictions between May 1, 1986 and May 1, 1987. The enzymes considered in the restrictions include: SGOT, SGPT, GGTP, AP, LDH, and Bilirubin. b. Compile work histories for employees meeting the criteria in "a" above. c. Compile serum enzyme records for each individual in the pilot study as far back as available. d. Develop, compile, or establish employee and job category exposure profiles for chemicals routinely monitored and reported for inclusion in the Chemical Group computer system. Calculate mixture exposures for these chemicals monitored on a routine basis. e. Assemble information on each employee's illnesses, hospitalizations, medications, infections, etc. that may result in abnormal serum enzyme levels. Document in a chronological order for each subject covered in the pilot study. f. Attempt to gather objective information on the employees alcohol, drug, etc. use to include consumption, frequency, and particularly any treatment for these intoxicants. g. Characterize by plotting the removal and return to the employee's normal job for each individual on a chronological basis. SL 048902 3. The data collected will be displayed (assembled) to permit a review on a case-by-case basis. The overall worker history, exposure, enzyme levels abbreviations, disposition, and complicating factors as displayed in a chronological fashion. This information would be compiled as a group to further assess if there are any common parameters among the pilot study population. 4. A review of the results will be made to determine if further reviews are warranted. J.C., I expect you will coordinate this with Lake Charles, Please keep C.B. Myers, M.D. and me advised.
