Hr. Jack Pompef, the Industrial Hygienist who conducted the survey and wrote the report is no longer with the Division. However, I have contacted Mr. Pompei and discussed with him his statement with regard to the lack of evidence to indicate exposure to asbestos and/or beryllium that would or could precipitate a debilitating pulmonary disease. As noted in his report, he was not able to evaluate the work conditions under which the claimant worked inasmuch as the facilities no longer exist. With regard to asbestos or beryllium, he remains by his original contention that evidence is lacking to support the premise that the claimant may have been exposed to beryllium. However, he Indicates that exposure to asbestos fiber can not be ruled out, inasmuch as the material was used in conjunction with open hearth maintenance and construction. His job in the brick depart ment might have involved exposure to varying amounts of asbestos fiber. Again, not being able to actually assess the conditions as the claimant would have encountered them, all information is based on conjecture.
