Holloway, Chairman of the Manufacturing and Mining Committee, called the meeting to order at the Ojai Valley Inn, Ojai, California at 10:30 a.m. Those in attendance were: M. M. Hambrick R. J. AIR AND WATER POLLUTION The committee briefly reviewed the Environmental Protection Agency industry air study, noting that no further EPA action had been taken relative to standards development since the air study was con cluded. Secretary Rogers reported on the EPA industry water study currently being conducted by VerSar, Inc., Springfield, Virginia. He stated that the EPA and VerSar representatives had visited the three western New York gypsum plants and the Southard, Oklahoma (alpha gypsum) operation with favorable comments on all locations visited. Secretary Rogers stated that industry questionnaire forms had been returned to VerSar, Inc., and that water sampling was planned to be conducted October 15, 16 and 17, 197*+ at the western New York plants with observation of the sink-float beneficiation operation at the Celotex Port Clinton plant on October 18, 197*+. Mr. Rogers reported that the EPA industry project should be com pleted by the end of 197*+ with the results published in the Fed eral Register in early 1975. He noted that industry review of the final report covering this study would be afforded prior to Fed eral Register publication. This subject was carried on the agenda. The committee briefly reviewed the State of Michigan air surveillance program and on motion unanimously approved, this item was dropped from the agenda. He stated that the industry could be requested to meet with the AAR to negotiate the requested changes. Mr. Rogers stated that he would advise the industry of the AAR conclusions to the proposed changes. 8. INDUSTRY WASTE PAPER SHORTAGE The committee reviewed the June 28, 1974 reply letter from the United States Department of Commerce relative to Com merce Department waste paper conservation efforts. Following a brief discussion, on motion unanimously carried, this subject was dropped from the agenda. 9. UNOERV/RITERS1 LABORATORIES/GYPSUM ASSOCIATION LIAISON Mr. Brackett, Building Code Committee Secretary, re ported on this subject, noting the importance of manufacturers' cooperation with UL on quality assurance and other programs. The' subject was carried on the agenda. 10. ASBESTOS DUST - JOINT COMPOUND Secretary Rogers reported that there had been no fur ther Association activity in this area since the annual meeting when the Association test program was completed. On motion unani mously approved, this subject was dropped from the agenda. 11. CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION Mr. Brackett reported on this subject, noting April 4, 1974 hearings on sampling program. On motion unanimously approved, this subject was dropped from the agenda. 12. METRIC SYSTEM Mr. Brackett reported on this subject, stating that the gypsum industry should consider taking the lead in establishing the metric equivalents which it wished to use whenever eventual conversion did take place, so that other industries with whom we relate would be guided into accepting our equivalents rather than alternatives which they might propose. Following some discussion, the Secretary was requested to circulate the Technical Committee Proposed Metric Conversion Chart for review and comment by the M&M Committee. Such review is to be completed as soon as possible so that the Technical Committee can contact other building manufac turing trade associations relative to our industry's metric dimen sions.
