SANTOQUIN ' Three batches of Santoquin residue were vacuum distilled at the J. F. Queeny plant to determine if Santoquin and para-phenetidine could be recovered from Santoquin re sid u e . The percent recovery varied from 1 2 .4 to 1 5 .2 with approxim ately 90 percent u sa b le product. Based on 1971 S a n to fle x AW requirem ents o f 1 3 .3 m illion pounds and a usage o f 140 pounds o f S a n to fle x AW per cwt of Santoquin, a residue recovery unit savings would be $ 1 2 4 ,0 0 0 per y e a r . ... ... . Santoquin l o s s e s , from the lower bearing of a LUWA th in -film evaporator, were encountered sin ce the units in itial sta rt-u p . Humble O il's Primol 355 mineral oil was su ccessfully substituted for Santoquin as the lower bearing lubricant. Raw material usage savings of approximately $ 8 ,0 0 0 per year are now being demonstrated on this $500 expenditure. TETRA C H LOROPPO PENE By-products formed from overchlorination of trichloropropene are resp on sible for considerable yield lo sse s in the tetrachloropropene p ro ce ss. To prevent this overchlorination, evaluations are being made to control the chlorine charge endpoint ard also to insure that better assay trichloropropene is being supplied. Laboratory work was begun to find a solvent or ca ta ly st to change the r e a c tio n m echanism . However, th is was u n s u c c e s s fu l and work on development of an inline GLC is in progress. Inquiries nave been sent out to determine the cost of better assay trichloropropene. 2 4 5-T A $ 1 , 0 7 0 cap ital p roject, to improve the color of 2 , 4 , 5 - T , was installed during March, 1969. The project provided for a new Eimco cake wash system that would permit the sodium 2 , 4 , 5 - T cake to be washed with c a u s tic . A plant demonstration showed that a cau stic wash improved the product color and decreased the percent TCP in the product. This quality Improvement was necessary to maintain sales to certain custom ers, CONFIDENTIAL SUBJECT TO PROTECTIVE ORDER. A $ 2 , 2 0 0 c a p i t a l p ro je ct to control the co n d en sation r e a c tio n pH is awaiting in stallation . This project will permit the use of a 34% NaTCP solution in stead of the present 25% NaOH so lu tio n . A four-day tria l run was conducted during A ugust, 1 9 6 9 , with no adv erse e f i e c t s 'o n product quality or y ie ld . Estimated cau stic savings will be $7, 900 per year based on a product rate of 1 .0 million pounds per year. An exp erim ental p ro je ct permitting the r e c y c le o i the pan filt e r wash w ater to th e Na 2 , 4 , 5 - T res lurry tank and the pan filter filtrate to the primary se ttle r was in s ta lle d in November, 1 9 6 9 . R e cy clin g wash w ater to the Na 2 , 4 , 5 - T res lurry tank w ill permit the recovery of dissolved 2 , 4 , 5 - T . Also, recycling the filtrate to the primary se ttle r w ill reduce the amount of new 93% H^SO^ required to lower the settler pH. Estimated TCB and H ^SO . raw material H savings are $ 2 2 , 0 0 0 per year based on a product rate oi 1 .0 million pounds per y ea r. The experim ental project is due to be te s te d during the next 2 , 4 , 5 - T production period. Additional H, S O^ raw m aterial savings may be re a liz ed by the in sta lla tio n of . a $ 7 , 5 0 0 cap ital project to reduce the H^SO. usage in the primary TCP s e a l e r . The project provides for a ratio control loop to add H. SO^ to the / j Eimco filtrate as it is transferred to the settler rather than depending on a v arian ce o f pH at th e lower portion o f the pH s c a l e . In s ta lla tio n of th is project will result in a H^SO^ raw material savings of $ 8 , 1 0 0 per year based on a product rate of 1 .0 million pounds per year.
