Ho. 257 - December 27 JAMES L. CARUTH DIES James L. Caruth, Pacific Coast Branch manager, died suddenly on December 23. He was 52 years of age, and had completed twenty-fire years of Company service on October 15 of this year. Mr. Caruth joined the Company in 1923 as a Carter white lead salesman for the southern states. Later he was transferred to the Chicago Branch, work ing out of the Detroit office. He was appointed assistant manager of the Cleveland Branch in January 1936 and manager in December of the same year. In March of 1942 he moved to the Pacific Coast Branch as assistant manager. Mr. Caruth became manager of the branch in January' 1943, on the retirement of the late R. P. Prentys. He had been a member of the Company's white lead sales committee since 1937. Mr. Caruth is survived, by one sister, Mrs. Montgomery Barrett of San Antonio, Texas, and three brothers -- Thomas of Shreveport, Louisiana, Charles of Austin, Texas, and Robert of San Antonio. MARTINO CHAIRMAN OF RED CROSS COMMITTEE President J. A. Martino has been appointed group chairman of the Commerde and Industry Committee (Manhattan and Bronx) for the 1949 Red Cross Fund Cam paign. His group includes the following New York City industries: chemical, drug, paint,varnish, paper, petroleum, rubber, non-ferrous metal, steel, iron, general machinery, and business machine. NEW DIVISION FORMED A new division of the Company, to be known as the St. Louis Smelting & Refining Division, will take over the operations of both the St. Louis Smelting & Refining Company and the St. Louis Smelting & Refining Works, effective as of JAnuary 1, 1949. THIRD ANNUAL DINNER FOR "111 LONG -TERMERS" The "111 Long-Termers Club" held Its third annual dinner on December 3 in the Hotel Biltmore, New York City. In attendance were 75 of the 90 active members and six who are now on the retired list. Company President Joseph 1. Martino serves as Honorary Warden. Active officers for 1949, elected during the business session at. the din ner, are C. F. Garesche, Warden; H. W. Dickerson, Deputy Warden; T. H. Smith, Keeper-of-the-Cash; Bertha K.
