I would appreciate any comments or suggestions you may have for followup. The attached chart represents percentages of individuals found with test results above the limits of normal set by the laboratory. I extracted all of the medical surveillance data on "liver enzyme tests" for vinyl chloride workers from 1978 through August 1983. The benzene group represents medical surveillance exams during one year (1982). The controls represent periodic multiphasic health evaluations on employees who were not at that time under medical surveillance for any type exposure. The pre-placements represent all that were performed from 1978 through August 1983. At first glance one might assume that work in a chemical plant has an adverse health effect insofar as AP, SGOT, SGPT and GGTP are concerned. Of course, factors such as increased age or perhaps change in lifestyle because of a better job, etc., have not been considered. We do plan to attempt to stratify the results of the vinyl chloride workers for 0-6 years, 6-10 years and over 10 years to determine if there is an increased incidence of abnormalities with continued exposure. At your suggestion we will see if there is a way to look at a group which was exposed but has not been exposed in the past five years. I have also asked Reuben if he would look at the results on his VC workers and see if his findings are consistent with mine.
