Dear Mr. Mote: * * v On March 1, 1989, an anonymous complaint was received at Division of Safety and Hygiene's Dayton District Office. The complaint alleged that employees were complaining of throat irritation from coolant in the Hydromation process used in Plant 3, Department 5, "Wheel Cylinders". One worker reportedly had been hospitalized after brief exposure. I contacted you that afternoon to discuss this matter and to see if this incident had been reported to Delco Moraine management. On March 2nd, you reported that medical personnel, department supervisors, union health and safety representatives and your office had not been notified of such an incident. You indicated that in October 1988 some problems did arise with the central system where "Houghton Hydrocut 461M" coolant is used. Employee concerns raised at that time were addressed by an outside consultant hired by Delco management. In light of the above information, the validity of the alleged complaint cannot be confirmed. If employee com plaints do arise, the following recommendations should be implemented: - Screen employees through your medical department, noting location, equipment, coolant or cutting oil in use, etc. - Affected employees!.should be treated by medical personnel, as needed .y-. yes > Pat Mote GMC - Delco Moraine Division Page 2 - Review the specific MSDS's with your employees and highlight the health effects and personal control measures that should be observed to minimize exposure.
