Grumbles July 9, 1987 TOXICITY TESTING FOR ALFONIC 1618-65 ETHOXYLATE I finally obtained a review of the existing 1618-65 data by a staff toxicologist at Still Meadow Laboratories where we are doing our current testing. They provided the service "gratis". Below is a summary of their review and recommendation for further testing. Based on the data readily available to us, the animal autopsy information indicates there may have been some ingestion of the test material after application to the skin. This is indicated by erosion of some stomach tissues. This is rarely seen as a result of dermal exposure. Additionally the occluding, or wrap material, used to cover the test area of skin was an impermeable material. Currently accepted protocols use a semi-permeable material which allows for a more realistic skin exposure scenario. Both of the factors mentioned above could result in increased toxicity as an artifact of the test and not necessarily the material. These factors do not fully explain the comparative difference of this ethoxylate vs. other similar ethoxylates but do support further testing as a valid method to resolve the issue. The toxicologist recommended that an initial step would be to do a "side-by-side" study with the two different wrapping materials, and other procedures to minimize the potential for oral ingestion. Results from this testing could validly be used to represent the dermal toxicity of the product. This experiment would cost approximately $1,300 if only one round of testing was required.
