Roberts Subject Asbestos Survey - Central Shops Address BRT Date July 31, 1978 On May 4, 1978, a personal breathing zone sample for as bestos was collected on a machinist while working with the lathe. The purpose of this survey was to evaluate the effect iveness of the new exhaust ventilation system installed on the lathe following relocation in the carpenter shop and also to document employee exposures while conducting routine job func tions . The personal sample was collected with ah MSA Model G air pump on an open face 37 mm, 0.8ygpore size, type AA millipore filter. The resultant sample was analyzed at 400-450 X magni fication with phase contrast illumination.' This survey was conducted while machining transite pipe. Visual observation showed good air movement in the cutting zone and good collection efficiency at the hood. The new ventila tion system seemed to do a fine job of controlling dust gen erated from this operation. The only dust that appeared to escape the ventilation system was generated by hand-sanding the finished pipe. The collection hood was not positioned to col- . lect this dust. Even with this contribution the personal sample showed an 8-hour TWA of 0.114 fibers/cc which is below the OSHA standard of 2 fibers/cc. To date, each operation at the carpenter shop that poten tially generates hazardous asbestos dust has been evaluated and all are in compliance with the OSHA regulation. The new ventil ation system is performing well and to ensure its continued suc cessful operation a preventative maintenance program should be developed and implemented. In our meeting on May 2, 1978, you stated a status report on asbestos would be written for the Baton Rouge plant. To complete my files and update my records I would like a copy of thi-s-report.
