Thank you very much for your letter of October 15 in regard to the subject of harmful effect on the human body from the ex haust gases produced by internal combustion engines.
The information which you supplied is extremely interesting and I feel sure will be of value to us in our program. It is our plan to make some detailed studies on the specific engine under consideration as soon as the first experimental unit is avail
able.
As you know, we build a large quantity of gasoline engines which are used in shop trucks. During the development of these engines we did a considerable amount of experimental work to reduce the carbon monoxide content in the exhaust gases. The best results were obtained by setting the carburetor mixture as lean as possi ble and designing the manifold to obtain good distribution be tween cylinders. In addition, we recommended adequate air cir culation and ventilation in the areas where these units are used. Thousands of these trucks are used throughout the country and to the best of our knowledge have given good results.
Cur problem in the program in which we are now interested is one which is more difficult because the operation is In a restricted space and it may be difficult to obtain an adequate supply of fresh air to insure safety against the small quantities of car bon monoxide which is permissible.
