Monsanto Chemical '''impany Texas City, Texas July 8, 1959 To: PLANT MANAGER'S SAFETY BOARD At: Texas City Subject: Hourly Safety Committee The Hourly Safety Committee met in its regular monthly meeting on July 7* 1959* This was the first meeting of the current term and four members were in attendance. The following safety items are recommended for consideration by the Board: 1. The wooden beds of the plant flat bed and pickup trucks need repair. Currently, in some cases, theBe are being repaired by placing a smooth surface boiler plate in the bed. During rainy weather, a slipping hazard is created for those having to ride in the truck. If metal replacement is going to be used, it is recommended that floor plate or non-skid paint be used. 2. During the life of a scaffold board, grease and grime accumu late on the board making it quite slick. It is recommended that boards which are exposed to such accumulation be Bteam cleaned before they are used for the next Job. Also, about 30 boards have been coated with non-skid paint but these boards are not being used at all or for Jobs not requiring such a board. The idea of having such boards is good if they are used for the purpose Intended, and we believe super vision should specify their use in the preparation of the work. 3. An incident occurred recently in which a tire on a crane blew out. This unbalanced the crane and had it been under load. It could have tipped over or at least swung the load, en dangering personnel and equipment. We believe that a regular inspection program should be set up for all plant mobile equipment.
