They were monitored while removing approximately 50 linear feet of insulation from a 6-inch steam line. The work was done at the Institute plant's chlorine dock. They were equipped with two pair of coveralls, head cover, boots, gloves, and an AO R57-A HEPA-half-face cartridge respirator. Their outer coverall was removed before leaving the barricaded area and the employees showered before going home. They indicated that they had not worked with asbestos materials before this monitoring period. The monitoring results indicate that the sample collected on S. R. exceeded the 0.20 fiber/cc Permissible Exposure Level (PEL), established by OSHA for an 8-hour workday (TWAs). The sample collected on was very close to the 0.10 fiber/cc Action Level, also established by OSHA, and will be assumed to have been exceeded, statistically. ; filter cassette was dropped into the river, therefore her sample was voided. sample, along with area samples collected inside and outside of the barricaded area, were well below permissible levels. This would indicate that the amount of area declared off-limits was sufficient. In the future, we recommend that a double check be made to assure that the steam has been cut off, if at all possible, and that the steam line and insulation has cooled down. Hopefully this will eliminate the evaporation of the wetting agent and help to contain the airborne fibers.
