Capsule Assortment of News Items IMPORT INVESTIGATION: The United States Tariff Commission is investigating the domestic lead and zinc industries. Hearings will be held November 3 concerning lead, and November 5 for zinc. The Commission will submit to the Senate Finance and the House Ways and Means Com mittees its findings on the effect of present tariff rates for imported lead and zinc on the domestic lead and zinc industries. The Association will be represented at the hearings. TRAFFIC: The Interstate Commerce Commission authorized the rail roads to continue, until December 31, 1955, the 15 percent rate increase granted in April 1952. This increase was scheduled to expire February 28, 1954. The carriers requested it be made permanent. LEAD-BASE PAINTS: The New York City Board of Health is con sidering adoption of a regulation to require a warning label on any paint roduct sold in New York City containing lead pigment or dryer. Your ssociation discussed this regulation with the New York Paint, Varnish nd Lacquer Association, the Lead Industries Association and other intersted groups. Objection to this regulation has been entered by your Association with the Commissioner of Health. A hearing has been re quested. Wecontend this regulation is unnecessary, unjustified, and places an undue burden on members of our industry who distribute their products n^lggj^orl^jjjr. FTC FLOOR WAX MEETING: The Federal Trade Commission has called a meeting of the Floor Wax Industry Committee for September 15 to give further consideration to the proposed trade practice rules for that industry. The proposed rules exempt paints, varnishes and lacquers in their provisions. An Association representative testified at the FTC hear ing on this subject, April 16, requesting revision of the wording to make certain that shellac varnishes are included in the exemption, and your Association will again be represented at the September 15th meeting. The Association has contended there is no need for the proposed trade practice rules because of the small number of complaints of unfair practices and the proven ability of the floor wax industry to maintain high standards of business ethics. This contention and other objections presented by the industry at the April 16 hearing will be discussed at the September 15 meeting.
