Hughes DATE: July 30, 1986 SUBJECT: Wellington Interview On Tuesday, July 29, 1986, Jay and I met with two Wellington inter viewers, David Gray from Owens-Illinois and Martha Wilke Murray from Peterson & Co. The purpose of their visit was to get more detailed case information and their questions focused on such items as: when were Grace's first asbestos personal injury and workers' compensation claims filed; on what issues does Grace face the greatest punitive damage expo sure; what additional asbestos-containing products, not necessarily subject to current litigation, were produced by other Grace Divisions; how many Libby employee mesothelioma cases were diagnosed prior to 1973; and, why were the settlements in Ohio for relatively large dollar amounts? It appears that the additional information gleaned from this meeting will be incorporated in a written report and presented to the Steering Committee within the next couple of weeks. The Steering Committee will review this report along with the New Entrants Form and will make a recom mendation to the Board of Directors as to our adjusted allocation percentage and the conditions of our admittance. The Board must then give their blessing before our allocation percentage can be released and we can be invited to join. As the Board meets monthly (during the first week of the month), September would be the earliest that we could expect them to discuss this issue. Based on David Gray's comments that the Board has its hands full with current operating issues and that new entrants are of the lowest priority, I would guess that it will be at least three or four months before we hear from them.
