LATH and PLASTER products merchandiser December 21, 1950 RUST PREVENTION AND CORRECTION ON SABINITE JOBS The occurence of rust spots in Sabinite, particularly when applied over metal lath, suggests the need for a few simple rules to follow in the prevention or correction of this condition. Reasons for Rusting 1. Slow drying conditions accentuate rusting, particularly when the metal is not completely covered with gypsum plaster. 2. I Rust occurs in Sabinite because the (tie wires, lath, ribs) are not completely I covered with l/V - 3/8" of gypsum plaster. 3. Sabinite, being a gypsum plaster, is no different than ordinary basecoat plas ters in rusting characteristics. Prevention 1. Provide adequate heat and ventilation to insure drying of basecoat and first coat of Sabinite within a maximum of 4 to 5 days. 2. First coat of Sabinite should be dry before finish coat.is applied. 3. Basecoat plaster and Sabinite should be applied to full specified thickness. 4. Tie wires should not extend below plane of the lath surface. 5. Metal inserts (light fixtures) or parts extending to the finished plaster sur face should be painted with one or two coats of rust resistant primer paint a day or two before first coat of plaster is applied. 6. Concrete ceilings over which emulsion and Sabinite will be applied must be checked for rust spots caused from reinforcing members at the surface of the slab. The spots must be painted with aluminum paint before applying emulsion. Correction of Existing Rust Spots Rust Spots in First Coat of Sabinite 1. Rust spot8 which have shown up in the first coat of Sabinite will not bleed through to the surface of the finish coat if the first coat is dry before the US&9103 BB019 0298 4 -2- ` finish is applied. As an added precaution, we suggest that any spots ranging in size from a dime to a half a dollar he touched with aluminum paint. Rust spots larger than this should he cut out, the tie wires hent hack and then the area patched with Sahinite, leveled off even with the plane of the first coat of Sahinite. Rust Spots in Finish Coat of Sahinite *1. Using a small paint brush, dah standard Texolite tinted to match the Sahinite over the rust spot. 2. If rust spots are very extensive, allow plaster to dry thoroughly and com pletely. Touch up worst spots with aluminum paint. Spray lightly and uniformly with a very fine water spray to just dampen the surface and apply a third coat of Sahinite to 1/8" thickness, following application directions for Sahinite finish coat.
