ASBESTOS Product Review
ASPHALT ' '
This represents perhaps the largest single group of m aterials using asbestos fibre., In asphalts oi a l l ty p e s , the general benefits of asbestos ere increased resistance to
high temperature flow, reduced cold flow, reduced low
temperature b rittlen ess, increased tensile strength, increased
fir e resistance, and overall viscosity control. Class
Jl (high fir e resistance) roofing shingles conatin large
amounts of asbestos to improve the general fire .re s is ta n c e
end reduce asphalt dripping of hot shingles. Xsphalt
coating materials contain various amounts of asbestos to strengthen them and to provide desired v i s c o s i t y ranging
from thin brush or spray applied paints to heavy bodied
trowelable roofing mastics. Automotive undereoatings and
frame paints are common items containing, asbestos. Asphalt road paving materials represent the largest v i r t u a l l y
untapped market for asbestos that exists. Data from
laboratory t r ia ls as well as te st in s ta lla tio n s show that
a few percent addition of asbestos w i ll give longer l i f e to paved roads. C r i t i c a l service conditions a t several
airports have been met by asphalt-asbestos mixtures. Paving
joint f i l l e r s are also improved by asbestos addition. Water based emulsions of asphalt-asbestos mixes are used on
walk-ways, driveways, and teppiS'courts.
CAULKS
AND
SEALANTS- Asbestos finds wide scale use and consumption in the manufacture of caulks and sealants used in commercial, and residential construction as well as in automotive production and in motor and mobile homes and a l l types of recreational veh icle s. In these cases asbestos not only gives reinforcement, yt also acts to absorb the various
oils used and allows'.the materials to be produced in the forms of rope, cartridges', or putty.
PAINTS-
Not only do a wide v a r ie ty of paints already contain asbestos, there are a great .many other paints that w i l l benefit
from such addition. Presently asbestos i s most frequently used in block f i l l e r and textured paints. In both types the
superior crack and imperfection bridging c h a r a c t e r is tic of asbestos is of primary importance. Block f i l l e r s are used to g iv e .a smopth appearance to such rough b u ild in g materials as concret :ajid cinder blocks. Textured p a in ts are used for the same purpose as well as for c eilin gs to g iv e a more interesting surface. While not a true thixotrope in most cases, asbestos o ffers a wide poten tial range of v i s c o s i t y modification and i s f u l l y compatible with both water and hydrocarbon based p ain ts. In addition to v i s c o s i t y control asbestos adds g r e a t ly to the dry film stren gth and t o t a l solids content at a very low cost. The r e s is t a n c e of
asbestos to u l t r a - v i o l e t li g h t and ozone elim in ates common
problems found with many other paint a d d it i v e s .

FAINTS(continued) Unlike chemical thickeners that gel water or a d v e n t
wi t h no real contribution to t h e d r y film solids c o n t e n t ,
a l l of t h e a s b e s t o s added becomes an integral part o f "the

'TERRA2.0 FLOORING- In the case of water slurry type terrazo flooring,
asbestosnot only contributes to the flexural strength of
the f lo o r , i t also adds to the workability by producing
a smooth, buttery consistency in the mix, Asbestosalso
contributes greater impact resistance to a l l types of
terrazo flooring.
* .
STUCCO-
Since stucco materials are invariably based on portland cement, asbestos not only reinforces the coating, i t improves the trowelabilixy and helps retain water to pr ovi de for an adequate cure and hence long l i f e ,
PLASTER- Asbestos used In plaster increases the crack resietance of
^
finished wall and acts as a water retention agent.
REFRACTORY C3 TENTS- Refractory cements generally cure to become
"
b r i t t l e materials unless strengthened by the addition of
asbestos fibres. Asbestos further aids in water retention
and trow elab ility. I t is the only economical fibre that
can withstand the temperatures encountered.
CREASES-
Fibrated greases are the heavy duty work-horses of the
industry. In greases, asbestos retards the natural flow of the g re a s e its e lf and helps to retain low melting point constituents during high temperature service.
FRICTION MATERIALS- The basic b rittlen ess of of the fusible compounds
in brake lin in gs, .brake pads, and clutch facings i s overcome
by the addition of asbestos fib re. Again asbestos is
capable of withstand the wide temperature ranges encountered
in service.
*
MOLDINC PLASTICS- Asbestos i s commonly used in the two most frequently
~
used molding p la s t ic s , i . e . , polyester and phenolic types.
I t contributes greatly to increased t e n s il e and impact
strength as well as reducing the c o e ffic ie n t of thermal
expans ion In phenolics, asbestos also can add t o high
temperature resistance.
.
PROTECTIVE-' COATINGS- V irtu ally a l l types of pro tective coatings are benefitted by the addition of asbestos fibres in the same manner as p ain ts.
WALLBQARD COMPOUNDS- The high absorption rates of water by certain
grades of asbestos and the controlled release of the water produce a smooth, buttery consistency allowing the material to be worked to a feather edge. In the dried joint cement asbestos contributes fle x u r a l strength. The smoothness and controlled water release allow the jo in t to be finished with
a damp sponge prior to complete drying which eliminates
dry sanding later and hence eliminates a second tr ip to the job s i t e .

cunnite AND PUMPABL5 CONCRETE- Materials of these types should have a
water retention property so that t h e p r e s s u r e s u s e d to . move the mix o v e r some d i s t a n c e . w i l l n o t c a u s e a separation o f w a t e r and make f o r a d r y mix, Asbestos performs this
function as well as increasing l u b r i c i t y so that the mix
may be pumped over a greater distance with less resistance.
'
Furthermore asbestos helps to retain water in th^ applied
materials to promote a good cure of the cement along with
improving the flexural strength by reinforcement*? *
DRILLING MUD- The same water holding characteristics . that .make asbestos
'
useful in concrete work, make i t an important .ihigrediant
in d rillin g muds. The soft, silky nature of Carey-Canadian fibres along with their water holding capacity makes them
a good choice for supplying lubricity and flushing action in d rillin g operations of many types,

CASTABLE ~
HI-TEMPERATURE INSULATIONS- Long fibreth>es of asbestos not only reinforce castable insulationsi they also aid in
water retention during the casting process eliminating,
to a large extent, air pockets, .puring the drying period
of such insulations, asbestos aids in water removal by a wicking action reducing cracking,
PLASTIC FILM- Many plastic materials, vinyls particularly, are ' ~~ " d i f f i c u l t to form into thin films due to th e ir extreme
f le x a b ility and low strength when in thin cross-section. The addition of Float Grade asbestos nonly redcues the excessive f le x a b il it y ('-improving "hand" or "body" ), but i t also Increases strength/.,
ADHESIVES-
In adhesives of a l l sorts, asbestos provides the usually expected improvements such as increased bridging ef f ect , greater strength, increased heat resistance, and improved
spreada b ilit y . In solvent type adhesives asbestos also
provides solvent hold-out to reduce skinning and spot
drying.
^
MILLBOARD- Asbestos combined with small amounts of portland cement forms
"
"
Millboard;"the familiar white fire proof support materials
in bread toasters and other e le c tr ic a lly heated devices.
YARN -
Asbesfod; formed, into yarnis used to weave f i r e proof cloth andis also used as valve packing.
