Papageorge - WPAPA I received a call today from a student at Smith College asking for our help in getting started on a National Science Foundation grant to study PCBs. The young lady who called was: Miss Ann Bures Chapin House Smith College Northampton, Mass. Miss Bures indicated the students are in the process of preparing a presentation to the National Science Foundation in order to receive a grant. She first requested any published information we might have on PCBs in order to give the students a background on the subject. I told her there had been considerable research done and 1 would try to send her a bibliography. She then asked if Monsanto would be willing to help the students set objectives for the project (i.e.: affects of PCB in the food chain, possibilities of biodegradabilityt toxicity, or whatever). Since her request seemed sincere and in no way suspicious, I told her we might be able to help them in setting objectives. The group is made up of junior and senior biochemistry majors and is directed by Professor George Fleck. Their equipment consists of gas chromatograph, mass spectrometer, NMR and a computer. It appears they could probably handle some rather sophisticated research. The students will be presenting the program to NSF on November 30, 1970.
