The Eaton brake lining wear gauge was developed for use with air actuated cam brakes where the minimum allowable lining thickness is 4 inch. "The brake lining wear gauge simplifies inspections, reduces guesswork, and provides a consistent method for mechanics to determine the necessity of doing a brake reline," says James Clark, Product Line Manager - Foundation Brakes. "Using this tool can even help fleets reduce some of the risk of sidelined vehicles at roadside inspections." According to Clark, the tabbed end of the tool can be inserted between the lining blocks of the shoe table and the drum while the brake is applied. If the tool fits freely, sufficient lining remains. If not, an appropriate brake reline should be scheduled. The brake wear gauge is recommended by Eaton for all 15, 16.5, and 18 inch brakes that are required to have a minimum of 4 inch of lining. The tool is not for use, however, with strip linings on 15 x 4 or similar brakes. A price of $2.00 each for the Eaton brake lining wear gauge, item number BRIG-0001, is charged to cover production and handling costs.
