The Tyler Plant is inone of a number of buildings which had been part of Camp Fannin which was closed in 19$h* There are a number of other industries which occupy a number of other buildings within the Camp. Mr. McMillan is from McGrcgory, Texas, which is near Waco. He had been . employed by the Blue Bonnet Ordinance Depot which closed in 19U5. This was a munitions loading operation. He transferred to Camp Fannin in 191*5 and stayed on until UNARCO which is the Union Asbestos and Rubber Company, . set up the unibestos plant in 195k* This company has its headquarters in Bloomington, Indiana, and it makes wallboard, packing, gaskets and warn. It is also in the steel fabricating and polyurethan business. The majority of the plant population started with the company at this time. One or two of the employees who are supervisory in nature had longer exposures having been employed in other plants of UNARCO. 2. Mr. James G. Mct*?urry is the shift superintendent of production and maintenance on days and Mr. C. Van Horn is the assistant to the plant manager as well as the safety director. He has been in training for about one year now. 3. There has been one disability award for asbestosis and this was in 1961. A Mr. Ed Land who had had a five-year exposure. lw The medical care is provided by a medical and surgical clinic with 6 to 8 doctors, located nearby. The office manager, a nonphysician, of this clinic along with a nurse from the clinic were giving influenza shots at the plant the day I was there. There are two hospitals that provide service for the area - each is with about 200 to 300 beds. One is Mother Frances and the other is the Medical Center. The pre-employment examination includes back and chest X-rays. There is a lot of question about periodic examination programs. Everyone had a periodic examination in 1961* in January including the chest X-ray. The Safety Shoe Program is such that a person can Order safety shoes through the company and can pay through a salary deduction. .' * ,' *. 5. There is about a 20-inch fan used to cool the batch loader which obviously interferes with the effectiveness of the dust, collecting system in the batch hoppers. Thchousekeeping is more difficult because of the nature of the flooring, particularly in the building operation where large amounts of the fibrous material is impregnated with the water glass and is stuck to the floors.
