BACKGROUND: Cavrock Corporation manufactures artificial fireplaces and brick from polyester laminates. RG-244 was being used as a thixotrope until the President of the company instructed that Cab-O-Sil be reinstated. They were worried mainly about the cost and necessity of medical exams. The results of a dust count conducted by Aetna Insurance in December 1971 show fiber counts up to 21 fibers/ml. This all came to our attention when Cavrock called B. L. Ingalls and asked if we would be willingto buy back some RG-244, since they couldn't use it in light of the new regulations. DISCUSSION: It was obvious from the outset that the real stumbling block at Cavrock was the President (Frank Chamberlain), not the employees or safety people. This was another instance can operation wanting to use 244 badly if we could provide certain assurances on its use. Their main concern was the Aetna dust count. This count was taken prior to the installation of a hood at the area of asbestos addition. Also, they have ceased grinding the edges of the me I os now preferring to cut them with a saber saw. Both operations, the source of high fiber counts in the Aeina report, now appear to be weii under control. it is important that resuiTS of our survey be transmitted to them as quickly as possible since we are losing business here every day and a favorable count will go a long way towards helping them make their decision. The other problem is medical exams. This was compounded by a recent letter from tho Yale Medical School to all asbestos users in Connecticut offering the use of a "traveling medicine show" affair where medical examswould be given in their trucks at an estimated cost of $20.0C a head. The majority of time atCavrock was spent discussing 'his question. Al Cummings has an open mind and was most receptive to our feelings on the matter. The big question is how much weight does Cummings swing with Frank Chamberlain? From inter office correspondence we saw between the two it seems considerable.
