ACTIVATED SLUDGE RESPIRATION INHIBITION TEST TEST SUBSTANCE Identity:Mixturecontainingperfluorooctanesulfonatweh, ich may also be referredto as PFOS, FC-95, or as a component of FC-203CF-X or FC-203CF. (I-Octanesulfoniaccid)(CAS # 2795-39-3). Remarks: The 3M productionlotnumber was 501. The testsample isFC203CF-X. Currentinformationindicatesitisa mixtureof 1% PFOS, 20% diethyleneglycolmonobutyl ether,70.2% water,2.75% Acrylicfoarner,3% sodium octylsulfate1,% triethanolamine2,% sulfonatedalkylethersalts, and 0.05% tolyltriazole. The followingsummary applies to a mixture with incompletely characterizedconcentrations of impurities.Data may not accurately reflecttoxicityof the fluoruchomical component of the testsample. METHOD Method: OECD Guideline209 GLP: No Year Completed: 1992 Analyticalmonitoring: Dissolvedoxygen concentrationpsH, and temperature. Statisticalmethods: Resultswere determined by calculatioonfthe % inhibitioin respiratiornate. Test organism source: Activatedsludge mixed liquorcollectedfrom the Metro Wastewater Treatment Plant,St.Paul,MN. Test condition: Dilutionwater: MilliporMeilli-C@wmater Synthetic sewage: per OECD method Reference and testsolution preparation: A stock solutionofthe referencesubstance,3,5-dichlorophenolw,as prepared by dissolving 500 mg in 10 mL 1N NAOH, dilutedto 30 mL withMilliporMeilli-QTM water, then broughttothe pointof incipienptrecipitatiownith IN H2SO4 and dilutedto 1 L withMilli_QTwMater. The pH ofthe reference solutionwas measured to be 7.6. Test substance was added directly totestvessels, initipaHl 6.5. Test vessels: Not given Number of concentrations: one (duplicatedp)lus I reference substance and 2 blank controls Temperature: 18.6 - 21.6 *C Total suspended solids and pH on day of testing:2.6 g/L (TSS in final1.04 g/L)and initiaplH 6.9 and finalpH 7.9. Element Basis: Respirationinhibitioans determined by oxygen consumption. Remarks:Valuescorrectteod20 OCforcalculations. RESULTS Nominal concentrations: 2 Blank controls, referencesubstance and 1000 rng/L(duplicated) Elementvalues: 30-minuteEC50=>1000mg/L 3-hour EC50 = >1000 mg/L Element values based on nominal concentrations. Remarks: Testingwas conducted on the mixtureas describedinthe Test Substance Remarks field. The valuesreportedapplytothatmixtureand not the fluorochemigalproportionalone. CONCLUSIONS The testsubstance 3-hour EC50 foractivatedsludge respiratioinnhibitiownas determinedto be >1000 rng/L.The 1000 mg/L treatmentcaused -19% respiratioinnhibitioant 3 hours. Submitter: 3M Company, EnvironmentalLaboratory,P.O. Box 33331, St. Paul,Minnesota,55133 DATA QUALITY ReliabilityK:limischranking2. The studymeets allcriterifaorquality testing. However, the sample puritywas not propedy characterizedand the study lacksanalyticaclonfirmationofthe amount offluorochemicalproportion inthe solution.
