Juno 28, 19**9 Date__ REPORT TO THE DIRECTOR OP RESEARCH PROM Acoustic.?! LABORATORY TITLE: On the Job Application of Spraying '.fool for Acoustical Treatment?. REQUESTED BY: VHAT IS WANTED: F. L. Marsh A description of the ^plication and evaluation of Spraying Uool on the Job. WHY WANTED: To determine the possibilities of using these nixtures for sprayed acoustical treatments. REPORT; 1. Mix containing Amosite fibers sprayed very veil onto a rib lath ceiling, no sections dropped off, nor did any blister' form. 2. Mix containing asbestos fibers hT-lfZ did not sprey on satisfactorily, some sections dropped off. 3. Mater usage for the .`."site nix averaged 1/2 lb. per lb. of material. The mix containing fibers required an excess of vrter. k. The sprayed material resulted in r. rough finished surface. 5. Asbestos floats in .roved the texture slightly, but contributed to dustiness. 6. Coverage at 5/8* thick rweraT*d 2300 aq,. ft. per ton, this is equivaleit to 2330 c . ft. per ton rt 3/'+" thick. 7. Jbr r r l l c S f t l o n The materials containing Amosite fibers sprayed on readily, with no sections dropping off, nor 'bliotor? forming. The spraying rate, at 5/3" thick averaged 2 1/2 lbs. per minute, 'iilch la conparablo to the Limpet implication rate. '.Jhen tan od, a rough surface resulted. The replication of a fine finish coat, did help emoothen the surface, hut not as smooth as Limpet. She water usage for the Amosite nix averaged 0.5 Ihs. per lh. of materirl. This was considerably less than uoed for the starch, .nocl nix previously applied. Type X 'iool nix appeared to use b1ightly more water than did Type A wool nix, hut this was only visual, since work could not he stopped to check the actual water usage. The nass when dried adhered very well to the nets! lath. # 707ilftS Report '.Io. 391 l'aGe 2o. 3 The application of the nix using the shorter asbestos fibers bT-bZ, did not perfom satisfactorily. An excessive amount of water had to be used resulting in a vet ness. The initial bond '*as poor, end none sections dropped off the oeiling. Than dried, the material appeared to be an satisfactory an the sprayed Anoslte nix. All of the sprayed wool -as covered *-dth a thin ooat of Linnet. The Linpet adhered very veil to the tool, and tamped to a smooth finish. The binder uned was Perfection Prate Powder shipped fron Chicago Its bonding action though satisfactory, did not perfom as -fell as paste powder previously used fron Dune] len, !?. J. The coverage for both types of material averaged 70 sq. ft. per 50 lb. bag at 5/8" thick, this is equivalent to 2330 ar. ft. per ton at 3/b" thidc. Generally the uool application *-W! dustier thru the application of Linnet. This dustiness *wi a.ttributod to tho ure of asbestos floats. 3 ie floats did improve the tscrture oligitly. Recommendations 1. The floats should bo renovod fron the formula, since the increase in dust, and the possibility of Aabesto3is outweigh the elicit incr*tre in surface snoothnear. 2. b'ith the possibility of purchasing the Amosite fibers at a lover eoet, the Anosite content of the formula should be increased 2 X this would help compensate for the removal of the floats. 3. The new formula, should be TJype X nineral ool Anosite fibers. Perfection Paste Po'fder (Dune" 1an, li. J.) The new formala would be advantageous in nexrafaoturing since 'uol is normally sacked bO lbs. to a bag, and. no adjustments of weights would be required viien risking 100 lb. batches, PfG/mjh ?. H. From the information that you have supplied to me I strongly suspect that has *mitral -"stenosis and this accounts for the abnormal contour of his heart shadow. The fact that his heart shadow was gettin larger is difficult to evaluate other than by a direct history and physical and knowledge of his past in greater detail than you can ob tain. This, of course, can only be done by his personal Physician or a Consultant chosen by his personal Physician. I suspect that has more of a problem with his heart than he either knows about or is willing to talk about. In all probability the abnormalities in the basal portions of ,his lung are related to the heart disease but the possibility that he may have inflammation and changes in the pleura of the lung which might be related to asbestos exposure should be kept in mind. I don't believe that at this point it should be pointed out to him. It is my impression that you have done as much as management needs to do since you have called to his attention the fact that he has an ab normal film. From my own past experiences I would not advise making a stronger approach to either or his Physician. with best wishes, Sincerely yours, -A ' \ George W. Wright,.
