PAINTS )5 Ma g en er al c o n d it io n s The painting contractor shall read and be governed by the general conditions of the contract, together with the special conditions on the painting. MATERIALS All materials required for painting shall be the brand and quality specified and shall be delivered to the building in original containers with labels intact and seals unbroken. INSURANCE The painting contractor shall, at all times, carry sufficient Workmen's Compensation Insurance on his workmen and public liability and property damage insurance on the job. The painting contractor agrees to protect the owner, general contractor and architect from all liens or damages arising from or caused by his work. The painting contractor shall comply with Federal Social Security and State Unemployment tax laws. SCOPE OF WORK The following specifications cover the complete painting and finishing of all surfaces throughout the interior and exterior of the building or buildings except as otherwise specified. The painting contractor shall furnish all of the labor, materials, tools, scaffolds and other equipment necessary to properly complete the work according to the plans and specifications. The painting contractor shall examine the specifications for the various other trades and shall thoroughly familiarize himself with all their provisions regarding the painting. All surfaces that are left unfinished by the requirements of other specifications shall be painted or finished as part of this contract. Copper, bronze, chromium plate, nickel, stainless steel, alu minum and Monel metal shall not be painted or finished except as otherwise specified. The painting contractor shall be held responsible for in specting the work of others prior to the application of paint. If surface to be finished cannot be put in suitable condition for painting by customary preparatory methods, the paint ing contractor shall notify the general contractor or architect in writing or assume responsibility for and rectify any un satisfactory finishing that results. STORAGE A room on the premises shall be assigned to the painting contractor for the storage of his tools and materials. The painting contractor shall properly protect the floors with drop cloths or building paper. Paint shall be mixed in suit able containers and all necessary precautions shall be taken to prevent fire. EXTRAS No payment in addition to the amount agreed upon in his contract shall be paid to the painting contractor unless au thorized in writing by the architect or his duly authorized representative. All materials are to be used as specified by the manufac turer's label directions. Any necessary materials not specifically covered and speci fied in this contract shall be subject to the architect's ap proval and the contractor shall submit to the architect before any materials are delivered, the name and the brand of the materials which he proposes to use and shall receive an ap proval of same in writing from the architect. All unspecified materials such as shellac, turpentine or lin seed oil shall be of the "best grade" or "first line" made by reputable, recognized manufacturers, and shall bear the labels and be approved by the architect. All colors shall be selected by the architect and tinting and matching shall be done to the satisfaction of the architect. In such cases as samples are required, they shall be executed in advance with the specified materials, for the approval of the architect. WORKMANSHIP All work shall be done by skilled mechanics in a workman like manner. All paints, stains, varnishes and other finishes must be evenly spread and flowed on, and shall be free from runs, sags or other defects. AH coats shall be thorough ly dry before applying succeeding coats. All enamel or varnish finishes which are applied to wood or metal shall be sanded between coats with fine sandpaper to produce an even, smooth finish. Exterior painting shall not be done in rainy, damp, or frosty weather. All surfaces shall be thoroughly dry. Interior paint ing or finishing shall not be permitted until the building is thoroughly dried by natural or artificial heat. All exterior and interior trim shall be back primed before installation. Tops and bottoms of upper and lower sash shall be finished the same as balance of exterior sash. Tops, bot toms and edges of doors are to be finished the same as face of doors after they are fitted by the carpenter. All primers and undercoats shall be tinted to approximate the color of the finish coat. The interior of all closets and cabinets shall be finished the same as the adjoining rooms unless otherwise specified. All adjacent work and materials must be protected with suitable covers during the progress of work. Upon completion of work, the painting contractor shall re move from the building all surplus materials, scaffolds and debris created by him and clean off all misplaced paint and varnish so as to leave his part of the work in a clean and finished condition. 1956-SWEET-01246 Page 3 PAINTING SPECIFICATIONS SURFACE PREPARATION Exterior Wood: All surfaces shall be free of dirt and loose or peeling paint. Knots and sap streaks shall be covered with a thin coat of Shellac. Nail holes and cracks shall be filled with putty after undercoat has been applied. Cause of any paint peeling on previously painted surfaces should first be determined and corrected before painting. Exterior Masonry: Surface shall be free of all oil, grease, loose paint, or other foreign matter. Defective or improper previous coatings must be removed by scraping or sand blasting. Surfaces previously painted with water emulsion or water-thinned finishes should be thoroughly wire brushed. Masonry cracks shall be cleaned out and patch filled with mortar similar to the original surface and uni formly textured. Note: A waiting period of from 60 to 90 days shall be allowed for new brick, stucco and masonry surfaces to dry before painting. Concrete: New concrete floors shall stand 4 to 6 months before painting and shall be neutralized by washing with a solution of three pounds of zinc sulphate to one gallon of water. Floors should be allowed to dry three days and then brushed free of crystals. Mildew: All mildewed surfaces should be treated with a good fungicide and allowed to dry thoroughly before painting. Efflorescence: All efflorescence shall be removed by scrub bing affected surfaces with a solution of muriatic acid (add a half pint to a pint of acid to a gallon of water), and rinsed with clear water and allowed to dry thoroughly. Metal: All surfaces shall be absolutely clean and dry, free from wax, oil, grease or dried soapsuds. Metal surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned with sandpaper or steel wool and thinner. All galvanized iron surfaces should be properly treated with a special chemical wash such as Galvaprep or comparable product according to the manufacturer's direc tions. All aluminum surfaces should be etched with Alumiprep following the label directions. Interior Plaster, Wallboard, Wood and Masonry: All oil, grease or loose foreign matter shall be removed. Cracks and open joints shall be cut-out and properly filled. All glossy surfaces shall be wiped with Martin-Senour Bond-Tite or washed with a mild alkaline solution such as trisodium phos phate or sal soda and rinsed thoroughly. All loose, blistered or otherwise defective paint shall be removed and edges sanded smooth. Putty or spackle (tinted to approximate finish coat) all nail holes, cracks and other defects after prime coat has dried. PAINTING SPECIFICATIONS 1. EXTERIOR WOOD SURFACES-SJDING: a. If the number "29" were assigned to the painting section, for example, that number would be placed before each hyphenated number, viz. 29-01, 29-02 etc. ng Specifications -01 INSTRUCTIONS TO BIDDERS The general conditions and instruction to bidders as applied on the general contract shall apply to the painting contract with equal force. .- 02 INSURANCE The painting contractor shall carry liabili ty insurance and workmen's compensation for all workmen on his payroll. The paint ing contractor agrees to protect the general contractor from all liens or damages aris ing from or caused by his work. - 03 SCOPE OF WORK The work to be done by the painting contractor shall include the furnishing of all material, labor, tools and equipment re- quired to complete the painting and finishing of building (s) as specified, -04 GENERAL The painting contractor shall be completely responsible for the finish of his work and shall take all necessary steps, whether speci fied herein or not, to obtain and protect the required finish until final acceptance by the architect. 05 MATERIALS All materials used under painting contract shall be as manufactured by National Lead Company, except where this specification calls for a non-"Dutch Boy" coating of Fed eral specification or its equivalent, or other approved coating. All materials shall be delivered on the job in the original sealed containers. All materials to be used as specified by the manufacturer's label on the package. All unspecified brands of materials, such as shellac, linseed oil, turpentine or thinners are to be pure and of the highest quality obtainable, and shall bear the manufacturer's label on each container or package. If the contractor desires to use materials of manufacturers other than specified, he must accompany his bid with a written re quest to substitute specific products of other manufacturers. This request to list each item specified, by manufacturer's name and brand; and the brand and manufacturer's name of each item to be substituted. This list to also state the price per gallon of each item and where a saving in cost is indicated the amount of saving to be deducted from the base bid. After award of the contract no substitution of materials will be permitted. All mixing required shall be done on premises, and materials shall be thoroughly stirred. No materials shall be reduced or changed in any way except as specified. - 06 COLOR All colors shall be subject to the approval of the Owner, Architect or Engineer. Tint ing or matching of colors shall be done un der the supervision of the Architect. In all cases a sample shall be applied on the job and the Architect must give his approval of it before work is begun. If required, three panels of each color and finish shall be pre pared in advance, with the materials speci fied, for the approval of the Architect or Engineer. "Of color selected" shall be understood of all coats specified herein. Where the final coat is to be a color, the preceding coat or coats should be tinted towards the finish color, using "Dutch Boy" Tinting Colors except where indicated to the contrary. Each coat shall have a slight variation of color to distinguish it from the preceding coat. 1956-SWEET-01271 16 15 Nat 07 GENERAL If the painting contractor considers any surface not his responsibility unsuitable for proper finish of his work, he shall notify the Architect of this fact in writing and he shall not apply any material until the un suitable surfaces have been made satisfac tory, or the Architect has instructed him to proceed. All knots or sappy spots shall be given one coat of shellac before painting. All nec essary puttying of nail holes, cracks and blemishes shall be done after priming coat has become hard and dry and before second coat is applied. On old paint the surface shall be first brushed with a wire brush or sandpapered and where it is scaling badly, shall be scraped or burned off. All greasy or oily metal surfaces shall be cleaned with solvent before applying any materials. All scale or rust shall be removed by scraping or wire brushing. All work shall be done in a workmanlike manner by skilled mechanics. All materials shall be properly applied, leaving the fin ished surfaces free from drops, ridges, waves, laps and excessive brush marks. No paint, enamel or varnish shall be applied until preceding coat is thoroughly dry and hard. No exterior painting shall be done in rainy or damp whether, and until surface is thoroughly dry. No paint shall be applied when the temperature is below 50 F or 08 CONCRETE, STUCCO AND MASONRY Concrete, stucco, and masonry surfaces to be painted shall be prepared by removing all dirt, dust, oil and grease stains, and efflorescence, and by roughening, when necessary, to provide good adhesion for the paint. The method of surface preparation shall be left to the discretion of the con tractor, provided the results are satisfac tory to the Architect or Engineer. Concrete or cement floors and other masonry sur faces to be painted with rubber base or oil base paints shall be free from excessive alkali and shall be thoroughly dry before paint is applied. Rubber base paint shall be applied with a short bristle brush. Surfaces to be painted with cement-water paint shall be thoroughly dampened with a fine spray of water before application of the paint. when the temperature is over 90 F. No interior painting or finishing shall be permitted until building has been thor oughly dried out. Hardware, hardware ac cessories, plates, lighting fixtures and simi lar items shall be removed during painting operations and repositioned upon comple tion of each space, or shall be otherwise protected. In general and unless otherwise specified, exterior oil paints shall be allowed to dry at least 48 hours between coats and interior paints shall be allowed to dry at least 24 hours between coats. Enamels and varnishes shall be allowed to dry at least 48 hours between coats un less noted in the detail specifications and shall be sanded lightly between coats with No. 00 sandpaper and dusted before suc ceeding coat is applied. Paints shall be thoroughly stirred and kept at a uniform consistency during application and shall not be thinned in excess of the printed di rections of the manufacturer. After apply ing paste wood fillers, excess shall be care fully and neatly cleaned from surface by rubbing across grain. All nail holes shall be filled with putty or other approved filler, tinted to match finish. Floors, roofs and other adjacent work shall be properly protected by drop cloths or other coverings. The paint shall not be applied on a frozen or frost-covered surface. The interval be tween coats shall be not less than 24 hours, and the first coat shall be slightly damp ened before application of the second coat. The paint shall be applied with a stiff brush, and thoroughly worked into the surface to seal all pores, cracks, and voids. The paint shall be cured by wetting the surface be tween coats, and at intervals for a period of not less than 2 days after the application of the finish coat. Nails and similar exposed metal occurring in concrete, or masonry surfaces shall be coated with shellac or oil paint before the cement-water paint is applied. New polyvinyl acetate masonry siding paints can be recoated after 2 hours of normal drying time. 1956-SWEET-01272 Standard Painting Specifications 09 METALWORK Shop-primed metalwork shall be kept clean and free from corrosion following installstion. Abraded surfaces shall be retouched prior to finish painting, using the same type of paint as the priming coat, -10 PLASTERWORK It is preferred that plasterwork shall be at least 2 months old and shall be thoroughly dry, clean, and free from grit, loose plas ter, and surface irregularities before paint is applied. Cracks and holes shall be repaired with patching plaster, properly keyed to the existing plaster, and sand papered smooth. All plaster surfaces shall be tested for the presence of alkali, which, if present, shall be neutralized with a solution of zinc sulphate mixed in the pro portion of 2V2 to 3 pounds to a gallon of water. After drying, the precipitate shall be removed by dry brushing. 11 WOODWORK All millwork and all other woodwork, where required, shall be sandpapered before ap plication of the primer. Small, dry, sea soned knots shall be thoroughly cleaned and scraped, and shall be given a thin coat of orange shellac varnish before the prim ing coat is applied. Previous to shellacking, large, open, unseasoned knots and all beads or streaks of pitch shall be heated by a blowtorch and then scraped off, or if the pitch is still soft, it shall be removed with mineral spirits or denatured alcohol. Re sulting voids, if any, shall be filled with putty. Nails shall be set. Painting shall pro ceed only when, in the opinion of the Archi tect or Engineer, the wood is satisfactorily dry. 1. Priming: All millwork specified to be ing given to the sealing of cross-grained rv-v painted shall be primed on all sides before surfaces. Woodwork other than millwork installation, with particular attention be shall be primed on exposed surfaces only. 2. Puttying and Glazing: After the prim ing coat has been applied, nail holes, cracks, and other depressions shall be filled flush with putty, colored to match the finish coat, and sandpapered smooth. Putty shall be dry before subsequent painting. Glazing rab bets and beads in exterior glazed sash and doors shall be given 1 coat of exteriorprimer paint before glazing. 12 CLEANING All cloths and cotton waste which might constitute a fire hazard shall be placed in metal containers or destroyed at the end of each work day. Upon completion of the work, all staging, scaffolding, and contain ers shall be removed from the site or destroyed in a manner approved by the Engineer. This nationally famous product, with other S-W quality paints, for protection of exterior wood and ma sonry, assures the architect of maximum durability and economy on all types of exterior surfaces. SWP Undercoater 450 Ready-to-use SWP, Undercoater 450 primes and seals badly weathered surfaces or unpainted wood and uni forms weathered and sheltered surfaces. It dries to a dull finish that bonds perfectly with the final paint coat. This material is extremely opaque, which insures good covering, and its special formulation gives it particularly strong adhesive qualities. SWP One-Coat White 476 A special formulation of SWP for a one-coat job over previously painted surfaces in good condition. It comes in white only and should not be tinted or mixed with other paints. For best results, use only over light colors --white, ivory, cream or light gray. SWP Trim and Tinting White The ideal white for painting trim where the body of the house is painted a different color, or is brick or stone construction. Its chalk resistant pigmentation makes it most desired for such surfaces. It is also the recom mended base for making light tints with the addition of Kem Tinting Colors, S-W First Quality Colors* or with regular SWP colors. SWP Fume Resisting White 436 In some localities fumes from factories, oil refineries, chemical plants, coal furnaces and decaying seaweed dis color ordinary white lead and oil paints. SWP Fume Resisting White 436 and S-W Gas & Fume Resisting Faints are formulated with special pigments and vehicles to give protection against discoloration from this cause. Mildew Resistant Additive Sherwin-Williams Mildew Resistant Additive is for use in areas where mildew is prevalent and extra protection is needed against discoloration. When using SWP House Paint, always add Mildew Resistant Additive to the undercoat as well as succeeding coats. SWP Trim Colors possess mildew resisting qualities and, therefore, do not require Mildew Resistant Additive. SWP Exterior Velvet Flat Paint Especially designed for use on stucco, cement block, brick, masonry, wood shingle, shake, rough lumber and asbestos shingle. It is not recommended for the painting of roofs. This companion product to SWP Gloss House Paint pro duces a beautiful, long-lasting exterior velvet fiat finish most preferred for stucco and shake surfaces. SWP Primer No. 61 Primer No. 61 primes and seals new or weathered stucco, concrete, brick, cement block, asbestos shingles and other masonry surfaces. It is highly resistant to alkali and when properly applied produces an excellent primer for these surfaces. S-W Concrete Floor Primer For use on new or unpainted concrete floors as an under coat for S-W Porch & Floor Enamel. It resists the alkali, always present in concrete, which attacks oil paints and enamels. Shingle Stain S-W Shingle Stain is designed for use on wood shingles where a stain rather than a painted finish is desired. Formulated from special oils, it adds to the life of the shingles as well as providing decorative value. Covering Capacity The architect and engineer are vitally concerned with the ultimate service a paint film gives both in appearance and protective qualities. Brushing a paint out to its maximum coverage per gallon is not always consistent with long time durability. True economy requires the maximum in protection over a long period and can only be obtained when paint is applied to an adequate thickness. Holds paint as well as first group but wood does not hold up as well when repainting is neglected. (d) Northern White Pine (e) Western White Pine (f) Sugar Pine. Group No. 3. Does not hold paint as well as first and second groups and wood is more affected by weather when repaint ing is neglected. (g) Hemlock (h) Ponderosa Pine (i) Spruce. Group No. 4. No paint ing shall be done (a) immediately after a rain or during rainy weather, (b) over frost or dew or (c) when the tem perature is below 50 F. Knots and pitch streaks shall be scraped or burned, then coated with shellac before priming coat is applied. All nail holes or small openings shall be carefully filled with white lead putty after the priming coat has dried. previously painted surfaces Remove all loose and scaling paint by scraping or burning. Causes of peeling paint shall be determined and corrected by repairing all defective flashing, gutters, spouting, shrink age cracks, etc., where moisture can penetrate behind the surface. In case of general peeling, check insulation, air conditioning, vapor barrier, etc. Remove all defective sash putty, clean sash and prime with SWP Undercoater 450. When dry replace with linseed oil putty and let harden, covering it when applying the finish coat. 501--Wood Surfaces--New, Unpainted First Coat--SWP Undercoater 450. Second Coat--SWP Exterior Paint. Second Coat--SWP Exterior Paint. 503--Fume Resisting Exterior Paint Where fume resisting paints are required on new wood, fol low Specification No. 501 above, using SWP Undercoater 450 for the First Coat followed with two coats SWP Fume Re sisting White 436 or S-W Gas & Fume Resisting Paint. On previously painted work, follow Specification No. 502 using SWP Fume Resisting White 436 or S-W Gas & Fume Resisting Paint for both coats. Porch Floors preparation Surfaces must be clean and dry. Adequate ventilation should be provided underneath porch flooring to prevent rotting from moisture. All loose, scaling or blistered paint must be scraped or burned off. All roughened wood and edges of 4 broken paint shall be sandpapered smooth. Masonry Walls preparation--New Work Surfaces must be clean and free from dirt and loose or excess mortar. Do not paint after a rain--surface must be dry. Do not paint over improperly cured stucco or concrete. preparation--Old Work Scrape off all loose or scaling paint and wire brush thor oughly, Allow several days of warm, dry weather for thor ough drying after a rain. Point up all bad mortar joints and fill cracks or broken spots with good cement mortar. Check for faulty flashings that might result in moisture entering the wall and affecting the finished work. Surfaces in poor condition as a result of peeling or loose paint or unusually porous surfaces resulting from the use of cement water paints should be sandblasted to remove old paint completely. 511--Brick, Stucco, Concrete, Cinder Block & Asbestos Siding First Coat--SWP Primer No. 61. Second Coat--SWP Exterior Velvet Flat Paint. Extremely porous surfaces may require an intermediate coat to seal and uniform the surface. Flat-Tone Alkyd Flat Enamel-- Odorless A washable fiat enamel that produces a rich, velvety fin ish for interior walls and ceilings, plaster, wallboard, masonry and woodwork. For best results on new plaster, the surface should be primed with Wall Primer and Sealer. On new woodwork, S-W Flat-Tone Alkyd Flat Enamel is self-priming. Painter Craft Fast-Dri Floor Sealer impregnates the wood with pre servative oil and resin, leaving a good surface build which seals against moisture and dirt. Dries in 2 hours. Painter Craft Alkyd Varnish is a full gloss finish, producing an elastic, durable clear coating. It dries hard in 8 to 10 hours. While intended primarily as an interior varnish, this product also possesses good exterior durability. Mar-not Varnish This is our highest grade interior varnish for floors and woodwork. Tough, water, heat and acid resistant. In a dry room at 70 F. Mar-not dries dnst-free in 2 hours; is hard enough to walk on lightly in 12 to 14 hours, and can be recoated in 18 hours. Comes in two finishes--full gloss and satin finish. Gym Floor Finish Built specifically to withstand wear and tear on gymna sium floors. It is a double-action finish as it not only hardens the wood by penetration but forms a tough sur face film that minimizes skidding, tracking and burning of rubber-soled shoes. It is also excellent for use on all types of wood floors subject to extra heavy traffic. Covers approximately 500 sq. ft. per gal. Flat-Rite (Enamel Undercoater) The exceptional smoothness and hiding power of this un dercoater contribute greatly to the quality of the enamel finish applied over it. Flat-Rite is ground to such fineness that painters mix it freely with gloss enamels to secure varying degrees of satin finish preferred by the client. Due to this clean fine grinding, the need for sanding between coats is greatly reduced. Flat-Rite dries to recoat overnight. Covers approximately 400 sq. ft. per gal. Rexpar Highest grade spar varnish. Its tough, elastic film is re sistant to sun, moisture and weather. Recommended for all outside varnished surfaces, and interior surfaces such as sills, sash, casings, laundry rooms, etc., where there is exposure to moisture or temperature changes. Floor Seal (Penetrating Varnish) A wood floor surface sealer and hardener designed to withstand the scuffing and friction caused by heavy traf fic. It enters the wood floor and hardens it from within by filling the pores and toughening the fibres of the wood itself, leaving little or no surface finish. Does not darken the wood or make the floor slippery like linseed oil. Second Coot--When required, same as First Coat. 52 1 --Wood Floor--Shellac Finish--Waxed Although not as durable as varnish, shellac affords a good base for waxing with minimum discoloration of the wood. First Coat--3# Cut White Shellac, reduced 50% with alcohol --sand lightly. Second Coot--3# Cut White Shellac without reduction. Third Coat--Same as Second Coat. When dry, buff with steel wool, apply hard wax and polish. 522-- Heavy Duty Wood Floors--Penetrating Varnish --For Schools, Departmonf Stores, Industrial Plants, etc. Sand smooth and clean thoroughly. Open grain woods should he filled with S-W Paste Wood Filler. Old floors should be washed or sanded as required. Previous coats of varnish, wax or paint must be removed. Where severe service requires periodic renewal, dress the surface with buffing machine, followed with one or two coats of Floor Seal as above. 525--Wood Doors and Trim--Enamel Finish Previously varnished or enameled work In fair condition preparation Old paint that is hard and glossy should be sanded or wiped with S-W Preparite before first coat is applied. It is important to clean the surface thoroughly with S-W Preparite, Exolvent or turpentine to remove the Taxite completely. Cover any bleeding stain remaining with shel lac or Anti-Bleeding Aluminum Ho. 413. Proceed as for Enamel Finish--Hew Work, specified under Ho. 524 above. 527-- Wood Floors--Enamel Finish--New Work First Coat--S-W Porch and Floor Enamel. Second Coat--S-W Porch and Floor Enamel. 528-- Wood Floors--Enamel Finish--Old Work All wax must be completely removed by scrubbing with cloth soaked in turpentine. For unwaxed floors, wash and dry thoroughly and either sand the surface or wipe with S-W Preparite to reduce the gloss of the old finish. Prime bare spots with S-W Porch and Floor Enamel reduced with Vss pint of S-W Exolvent or turpentine per gallon. Finish Coot--Apply one coat S-W Porch and Floor Enamel. 523--Gymnasium Floors--Non-Skid Finish Sand smooth and clean thoroughly. Open grain woods should be filled with S-W Paste Wood Filler. Old floors should be washed or sanded as required. Previous coats of varnish, wax or paint must be removed. First Coot--S-W Gym Floor Finish, brushed or mopped on. Second Coot--Same as First Coat. Gym Floor Finish may be buffed with a power buffer, bat best non-skid properties are obtained with non-buffed finish. 529-- Concrete Floors The surface must be clean, dry, free from oil, grease, soap or wax. Etch the floor by using a 1-lb. 6-oz. can of Bowlene or Sani-FIush to a gallon of water. Apply at the rate of one gallon of solution per each 100 square feet. Allow to stand 10 minutes and flush off with hose. Allow to dry thoroughly, about 48 hours, before painting. First Coot--S-W Concrete Floor Primer. Observe all necessary precautions for safety of workmen in closed or semi-closed 8 tanks. Carciad Finishes Vinyl-type finishes, having good resistance to mineral acids and alkalis. Used over the proper primer, Carciad Enamel is tough and flexible, and has good exterior dura bility in the presence of many chemical fumes. Carciad Primer is recommended for sandblasted steel only. Gripclad Primer should be used when steel is not sandblasted --also on galvanized iron, aluminum, stainless steel and copper. application--Chiefly by spray--can be brushed with diffi culty. Chemical Resistant Finishes preparation All surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned before applying these highly resistant finishes. For maximum performance, the surface should be sandblasted. Galvanized Iron preparation Galvanized iron must be thoroughly cleaned with naphtha or other solvent to remove grease and residue on the surface. If chemical washes are used, manufacturers ' directions should he followed. For best results, new galvanized iron should be allowed to weather 6 months prior to painting. Old galvanized iron should be scraped and wire-brushed to remove loose and flaking paint, with rusted areas wirebrushed to sound metal. Color Harmony Semi-Gloss Enamel Color Harmony Semi-Gloss Enamel is a companion prod uct to the Satin Finish. Both the Satin Finish and Semi-Gloss have been tested by years of severe service under a wide variety of conditions. They are designed expressly to improve room lighting through high light reflection value (approx imately 90%) on ceilings and walk and to retain their original whiteness for a long period of time. Save-Lite is furnished in a number of types to meet varying conditions, but each product labeled SaveLite must meet the most exacting standards of qual ity. Save-Lite can be applied by either brush or spray to any interior surface--wood, metal, con crete, plaster or composition board. It is not an exterior paint. Kem Save-Lite A brilliantly white synthetic white finish of great dura bility. The gloss F 80 W2 produces a beautiful, tile-like surface highly resistant to moisture, mold, and mild chem ical fumes; it is lead-free. Recommended for textile mills, paper mills, food plants, distilleries, laundries, and other plants where moisture resistance and sanitation are im portant. Available in Flat, Eg-Shel and Gloss Finish. Kem Fume and Moisture Resisting Save-Lite This is a technical coating, resistant to strong chemical fumes and moisture and will stand much higher tempera tures than ordinary white paints. It is a true Save-Lite in whiteness and non-yellowing properties. Available in Flat, Eg-Shel and Gloss Finish. Cold Storage Semi-Gloss White A special type of white paint for use in cold storage areas. Dries by evaporation so that fumes that would contami nate food are entirely absent 72 hours after application. This contrasts with conventional oil paints, which give oS noticeable fumes many days after application in a closed space. Use one or two coats as required to cover. Brush directly on the surface without primer or undercoater. Save-Lite Primer and Sealer, Save-Lite Undercoater Save-Lite Primer and Sealer for new masonry, and SaveLite Undercoater for previously painted surfaces provide the proper foundation coat for all Save-Lite Finishes. It produces a velvet-smooth finish of highest quality and washability, and is remarkably easy to apply. Quali-Kote covers uni formly and completely in deep shades as well as in tints. It may be specified for residences, schools, hospitals and hotels where long wear and low maintenance costs are important considerations. Quali-Kote is manufactured in a full range of attractive colors, from deep shades to soft pastels. Many additional colors can be made by simple intermixes. The line in cludes a special Ceiling Flat White designed to give the ideal flat or matte surface for ceilings. On bare metal, Quali-Kote requires a metal primer. On new plaster, it is recommended that Quali-Kote be used over a conventional oil-type primer and sealer, which must be allowed to dry thoroughly. application--By brush, roller or spray. Dries in one hour. Tools may be cleaned and spatters removed with hot, soapy water. Surfaces must be rinsed thoroughly after gashing. Calci mine-type paints must be removed. Surface Preparation--Metal Surfaces Bare metal, both new and old work, shall be wire-brushed and primed with S-W Kromik Metal Primer before QualiKote is applied. 546--Walls and Ceilings--New Work--Two Coots P/a*for and Masonry Surface* Flr*t Coat--Painter Craft Pigmented Wall Primer and Sealer. Do not use conventional solvent-type thinners such as turpen tine, mineral spirits, etc., nor oil tinting colors. 548--Walls and Ceilings--Old Work-Two Coon First Coot--S-W Quali-Kote. Dry Wall Construction is of interest as a new building technique where low cost is a factor. After a long period of study and testing, Sherwin-Williams has developed a finishing system that gives dry wall construction a uni form, satisfactory appearance closely approaching that of conventional plaster. 5-W Joint Filler This is a ready-to-use joint cement, which enables the mechanic to trowel the taped joint and smooth the sur face to conform perfectly with the adjoining wallboard. It is non-alkaline and will not bum through subsequent paint coats. Painter Craft Texture Finish This is a latex-base stippling material matching corre sponding colors in Quali-Kote. It can be used to give a variety of textures including a roller stipple, brush stip ple, or sponge stipple. Painter Craft Texture Finish requires no primer and one coat is normally sufficient. However, a finish coat of Quali-Kote may he applied if desired. Quali-Kote Dry Wall Primer Plasterboard requires a special primer that will not raise the nap and yet seal the highly porous board. This is the particular function of Quali-Kote Dry Wall Primer. Although designed primarily for dry wall work, it can be used as a primer on conventional plaster or masonry and may he finished with either Quali-Kote (latex) or oil-type paints. 549--Taping Dry Wall Joints a. Apply an even layer of S-W Joint Filler using 5-inch broad knife. Fill the joint completely, leaving additional material on either side to imbed tbe tape. b. Bed an approved perforated, paper tape (folded at cornexs) into the joint filler, centered on the joint full length. Bun the length of the joint with broad knife, forcing tape deep into the joint filler. Scrape off all excess, making sure none is left on the tape to harden. c. Spot all nail heads and other defects full and flush with broad knife and Joint Filler. d. Allow to dry overnight. Then apply a top coat of Joint Filler to nail heads and joints. The top coat shall be per fectly smooth and faired into the adjoining wall surface without ridges or trowel marks of any kind. e. When dry, the entire joint area and all nail heads shall be sanded with medium sandpaper wherever necessary to ob tain a perfectly smooth piece of work, ready for application of finishing material. 550---Texture Finish (Using Pointer Croft Texture Finish) First Coot--S-W Texture Finish. Apply by brush and roller or spray. Stipple immediately to desired finish with brush, roller, sponge, whisk broom or wood block. Socond Coot--(Optional) S-W Quali-Kote.
