SHUTT WENATCHEE WORKS CONFIDENTIAL March 17, 1969 RE: GRIEVANCE OF FAULKNER AND WOOLET CONCERNING SAFETY MEASURES IN BRICKMASONS' AREA BUILDING 47. _________ _ A second-step meeting was held at 3:30 P.M. Thursday, March 13, 1969. The Union was represented by Messrs. Mooney, Mosher, Woolet, and Faulkner. Representing the Company were Messrs. Harris and Mathews. The grievance dated 2-26-69, signed by R. B. Faulkner and G. 0. Woolet, reads as follows: "We grieve the lack of safety measures in the brick shop for our protection from the inhalation of asbestos dust." The Union was actually satisfied at the first-step meeting held 2-26-69, but wanted to go to the second-step to get a written answer. We told them that an engineering study was now underway to determine the best solution. Also, that the fan in the paint spray booth was now opera ting and that refractory digging would be done outside now that better weather is here. Mr, Faulkner asked if we could mix asbestos and water in advance for several days usage, doing this in an area separate from the one they normally work in. Faulkner and Mr. Guy. Woolet. For Management, R. H. Patrick. Mr. Faulkner complained that there was a lack of dust collecting equipment to remove the asbestos bearing dust from the shop. This dust is created by the digging of transfer troughs in preparation for repairing or relining. They also complained that the fan to the print spray booth, which is used, to remove the dust when mixing asbestos feathers, had not been repaired. The writer assured them that the new fan blade that was necessary to repair the paint spray booth fan was cue in and would be installed immediately on arrival. The writer also informed them that some very serious thought had been given to the problem and that J, 2. Harris had assured him that something was forthcoming and that every effort would be made to resolve the dust situation before next fall. The writer assured the grievant that with the weather breaking, all digging ef refractories would be done outside of the building.
