Mennone R. W. Prout now. E. J. D'Aquanno wi*Ci, NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT - 1985 BUSINESS PLAN The New Product effort for 1985 will be concentrated primarily around the follow ing items, 1. Thin wall Insulations. 2. Small gauge size wires. 3. "Second Generation" polymers--the Polyloy compounds. 4. Asbestos replacement or alternates. 5. Improved high temperature products. Thin wall insulations and small gauge size wires are natural outgrowth of the needs generated by the electronic industry for instrumentation and data processing applica tions. Insulation walls of 15 and 20 mils for 300 volt and 600 volt applications using various performance type polyolefins for special applications will be required. These wires will require U.L. Type TC and/or appliance wire listings at various temp erature ratings. Our program has been started and the first samples using KXL760 and KXL800 (Polyloy) are under test. Other compound candidates will be Investigated as we continue Into 1985. These thin wall materials will be processed using our electron beam facilities at East Granby. The Polyloy compounds will answer the need for Insulation and jacket materials with Improved requirements for higher temperature resistance (Polyloy TR); more abrasion resistance (Polyloy AR); and low smoke and toxicity (Polyloy LS). While the major development work has been completed, additional work will be required to fine tune compounds to comply with some special customer requirements. These materials are re quired primarily for the transit industry, the mining machine Industry, and for appli ance wiring applications. Work In 1985 will Include obtaining appropriate U.L. listing for these materials. While we continue to fabricate some standard asbestos constructions, obtaining the proper asbestos materials Is becoming an Increasing problem. In addition continuing requests for asbestos-free products require that we continue to work toward finding suitable replacement or alternates for asbestos. We have made significant progress already, but more work must be done. RBB 00202 SC-ELEC-08560 To: E. E. Birth Sub: NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT - 1985 BUSINESS PLAN Page 2 November 8, 1984 Improved high temperature products include the same asbestos replacement as above In some lines of aircraft wires. Work will be continuing toward this objective as well as Improvements in wire performance requirements, wire size and weight as re quired by the aircraft industry. In the elastomer category, we have a project to improve the aging properties of our colorable Hypalon KK150 compound to comply with ICEA requirments. Also, we have a project to develop a more flexible neoprene compound for thin wall (15 mil) extrusion applications. We have developed a very special fire retardant cable construction (Flrezcne R) for Appendix R applIcatlonsfor the nuclear industry. We plan to develop a commercial version of this Flrezcne R for use in the petrochemical Industry which has a similar cable fire test requirement. EJD/agh RBB 00203
